In 2018, Delta and Olivia's friendship took an interesting turn, when the Innocent Eyes singer was asked to play her idol in the Channel Seven telemovie based on her life, Olivia Newton-John: Hopelessly Devoted to You.

Olivia, 71, says she was initially "horrified" by the idea, but soon realised project "was going to happen whether I wanted it to or not,"she told The Australian Women's Weekly at the time.

As for Delta, she says she was extremely nervous about taking on the role, and sought Olivia's advice before she agreed to the deal.

"First and foremost, I'm a loyal friend," Delta told TV WEEK in 2018.

Ultimately, it was a decision she couldn't have made without Olivia's backing.

"I spoke in depth with her about it for weeks, and we decided together," Delta explained.

"She was the one saying, 'You can do this,' and I was like, 'OK.'

Despite her hesitations, ONJ said she had faith that Delta would do the part justice.

"I love Delta. I think she's a really good actress and a great singer so that made it okay, because we're friends", ONJ told The Australian Women's Weekly.

"In the beginning she called me and asked, 'Shall I do it or not?' First I said, 'I'm not sure,' and then I said, 'Oh you do it'."

In the end, ONJ gave the money the received from the project would go to her cancer centre, the Olivia Newton-John Cancer Wellness & Research Centre in Melbourne

"I don't know how accurate it is because it's a movie, and people weren't there at every moment of my life but the money will go to the hospital, so some good has come of it."
