Sir Billy Connolly has revealed his first nickname – and it’s about as far removed from The Big Yin as you can get.

Branded Cuddles by an irate teacher in his Glasgow primary school, he said he was terrified the moniker might never leave him.

In a new documentary, the comedian has talked more about his tough upbringing in the city’s Partick and the bizarre name that could have ended his stand-up career before it even started.

He said: “I had the worst nickname in the world when I was at school. It lasted about a year but it mercifully went away.

Someone had this printed-up thing called Cupid’s Cuddling Circle, which read, ‘This certificate entitles you to a cuddle from such and such and so on.’ It was passed round the class and someone passed it to me.

Billy Connolly grew up in a Glasgow two-room apartment in the 1940s and 50s. He was abandoned by his mother and beaten by his aunt and sadistic teachers. This is an extract from his Given the trouble I was in at school , it was no surprise to anybody, least of all me, that I only just scraped into

“The teacher went, ‘What’s that, Connolly? Bring it out here.’ He took it and he read it and said, ‘OK, Cuddles, sit down,’ and that was me for a year.”

His new six-part series – Billy and Us – sees the comic reflect on his colourful yet often traumatic life and the funny, yet insightful, comedy it inspired.

From the shipyards to sex, religion, class and politics, Connolly talks candidly about his life and career, while reviewing a range of archive film, which includes his classic routines, interviews and long-forgotten footage.

In the first episode – Stupid but Saveable – he reflects on his poverty-stricken childhood which saw him battered at home by his father and belted at school by teachers, who branded him an “idiot”.

Ruby Princess Special Inquiry reveals minimal testing conducted onboard

Ruby Princess Special Inquiry reveals minimal testing conducted onboard The Special Inquiry into the Ruby Princess cruise ship fiasco has revealed very few COVID-19 tests were conducted on board the ship before 2,700 passengers were allowed to disembark in Sydney on March 19. Council assisting revealed on Tuesday that there were only 25 virus testing kits available on the ship, only 13 of which were used. Special Commissioner Bret Walker rejected a statement by epidemiologist Kelly-Anne Ressler during her examination on Tuesday in which she said the cruise ship giant refused to cooperate with NSW Health. About 1,000 infections and 21 fatalities have been linked to the Ruby Princess cruise ship.

“ He ’s a war hero because he was captured. I like people that weren’t captured.” Mr. Trump described his education, business life, marriages and childhood in extensive interviews with Michael D’Antonio, a Pulitzer Prize-winning former reporter at Newsday.

He recalls camping trips to Clydebank, peeing competitions with his pal and his run-ins with the scary school janitor Mr Loftus, who inspired The Janny Song – one of his most famous ditties.

Billy, 77, whose mother walked out on the family when he was four years old, said: “It was post-war Britain when beating up children was normal for the slightest things.

There were no generation gaps as children were battered on to the next. I always stood apart. My mum left home when I was very young and I was always looking for attention by showing off in stupid ways, like by sitting in puddles.

“My most vivid memory of childhood is of me and Gerald McGee seeing who could pee the highest.

“My father caught me and hit me so hard on the back of the head my willy popped back into my trousers.

His name was Sampson. He was a tall, well-built, pale, black-bearded man. I think we liked him . He had travelled a good deal, and had stories which amused us on our school walks, so that there was some competition among us to get a chance to listen to him .

He swept out of the drawing-room with giant strides and Philip hurriedly limped behind him . He was taken into a long, bare room with two tables that ran along its whole length; on each side of them were wooden forms. “Nobody much here yet,” said Mr. Watson.

“I just wanted to make people laugh. I didn’t set out to shock. The scrapes and embarrassments of me and my classmates and the chaos and catastrophes of being a child make for good material.”

Billy, who was raised by his dad and his two aunts, added: “I had a psychopathic teacher who used to say, ‘I taught your father and he was an idiot too.’

“The experience of school stays with me to this day. It was traumatic. You take the worst things and try to make them funny.”

In the series, which starts on Thursday at 10pm, the comedian reveals he was also terrified of the school janitor, who got him the strap more than once.

He said: “The janny dominated the school. I lived opposite the school and I ran about with his kids.

“One summer someone carved BC in the door post of the school when he was away – it wasn’t me,

incidentally – but he shopped me to the headmaster and I got belted for it. I got a song out of him.”

Every day that wasn’t a school day was an adventure for young Billy who, like the other kids then, was allowed to roam free on the streets.

The dad of five said: “When I wasn’t in school, I was delirious with joy. The back court behind the tenement buildings was the Wild West, it was a pirate ship, it was everything. We played games, we had gang warfare. We were left totally to our own devices.

Lewis Hamilton: Ghost races are worse than test drives

It is already certain that there will be no audience at the current planned start in Spielberg. This fate is likely to affect all other races at least until autumn. Lewis Hamilton reveals that he doesn't like these ghost races.

He saw the posts and quickly suspected that the bullying was a top reason why 85% of his students chronically missed school . "These are kids, good kids who want to learn, that are missing three to five days a month because they were being bullied because they were dirty," Cook explained to CNN.

His name was Sampson. He was a tall, well-built, pale, black-bearded man. I think we liked him . He had travelled a good deal, and had stories which amused When Sampson read it he got up and went to the mantel-piece and stopped quite a long time without saying anything looking really embarrassed .

“I used to go camping with a bicycle, a bottle of water and a blanket. We went to Bowling down toward Clydebank. We camped on the canal bank in an old tent.

“Now if you had said to my father, ‘Where’s Bill?’, he would say, ‘Away camping.’ If you said, ‘Where?’, he would say, ‘I’ve no idea.’ When you think of today and people thinking there are child abusers hiding up every tree, it’s remarkable.”

Billy, who is married to psychologist Pamela Stephenson, said: “Everyone wore wellies. Wellies they are wonderful, wellies they are swell, for they keep out the water and they keep in the smell – and that’s where If It Wisnae for Your Wellies came from.”

After watching footage of an interview with Michael Parkinson in 2001, where he talks about the sexual and physical abuse he suffered at the hands of his father from the age of 10, Billy admits his dark past has shaped his career.

He added: “Good comedians tend to have a dark past. You don’t have to have done something criminal. My background and inability to be educated made me think differently to everyone else and I’m grateful.

“When I joke about my childhood, there are bits of truth exaggerated out of all proportion. I exaggerate it to make it acceptable to people to get them to recognise I am talking about them as well as me.”

The documentary, which was filmed at the end of last year, saw Billy – who was diagnosed with Parkinson’s in 2013 – looking remarkably well. The series is the highlight of BBC Scotland’s Big Yin celebration season.
