" Escape from Pretoria " is based on the prison escape of two political captives from Pretoria Central Prison in South Africa in 1979. Visually, the movie excels as well, using various cool camera tricks and touching up the suspense with technical means, the cinematic language is on point all throughout.

Aussie actor Daniel Webber has developed a knack for playing real-life figures. He portrayed JFK assassin Lee Harvey Oswald in the 2016 mini-series 11.22.63, and played Mötley Crüe frontman Vince Neil in the 2019 biopic, The Dirt.

Now Webber stars in the real-life prison break movie, Escape From Pretoria, opposite Harry Potter star Daniel Radcliffe. The pair play Stephen Lee and Tim Jenkin, respectively, two political activists jailed in 1978 for undergoing covert operations for Nelson Mandela's anti-apartheid party, African National Congress (ANC).

But in an incredible display of ingenuity, the duo successfully broke out of the country's Pretoria Maximum Security Prison by secretly carving wooden keys in the woodwork room that unlocked all 10 steel doors to freedom. Genius, right?

"It's an extraordinary true story," 31-year-old Webber tells 9Honey Celebrity while promoting the film. "I read the script, and it was a wonderful script, and watching the documentary, I clearly remember getting sweaty palms.

"I figured if they can achieve that same effect in Escape From Pretoria, that's so powerful in documentary form, what can we do in narrative form? Who knows how much we can capture the audience's attention. It was a very exciting prospect."

The result is a heart-stopping prison break film that will keep viewers on the edge of their seats. But at the heart of the movie is the spirit displayed by Jenkin and Webber's character, Lee — two middle-aged white men who fought to end racial segregation in South Africa.

"It's so rare to tell a story about real people whose values and morals are in the right place. They were almost too good in some ways for where their country was at the time," Webber says of the political prisoners.

"Those are the stories that you want to put out there in the world. You want to be able to support these guys who are fighting a regime that was oppressive to people's cultures and race. It's a joy to tell those stories."

Webber remains in awe of Jenkin and Lee, with the former often lending his firsthand knowledge on the set of the movie, which was filmed in Adelaide, South Australia.

"What I really loved about Stephen is he did this amazing thing and he's never been about trying to get the spotlight from it. It's not about that — he truly believed in the interactions and what they were doing," says Webber, who met the real-life activists over Skype prior to filming.

"We met both of them two weeks beforehand, and Daniel and myself were both very excited. Hearing their stories from their mouths was quite an incredible experience, so we came away from those meetings very passionate about storytelling and telling their story."

It also inspired Webber to be more conscious of the world he lives in, with the star admitting, "I wouldn't have said I was really politically active. But I think just doing the film, you can't help but develop your social conscience a little bit more, and make you think about what you could be doing in the world. It's quite inspiring and definitely makes you think a lot more about the world."

That's another reason why Webber likes portraying real-life people in movies. As mentioned earlier, the Aussie played Lee Harvey Oswald in the series created by esteemed filmmakers Stephen King and JJ Abrams, before rocking out as Vince Neil in The Dirt.

And although a great amount of character preparation is involved before filming movies like these, Webber loves to immerse himself in all the research.

"That might be one of my favourite parts about doing this whole job, burrowing away for two months and just reading and researching and learning," Webber explains. "That's just the joy of what I get to do. I get to study things like the rock'n'roll world of Vince Neil, and I get to study 1960s America and Lee Harvey Oswald and all of the history attached to that."

"I get to study the apartheid and the people involved, and I finally read Nelson Mandela's Long Walk to Freedom, which has been 10 years in the making," he adds. "It forces you to look into their worlds and people's lives in a really interesting way, and learn on a much deeper level than you normally have to."

Webber just wishes he was able to work more on home soil. While he was born and bred in Gosford on the NSW Central Coast, Webber is now based in the US, so welcomes any project that allows him to travel back home to Australia.

"It's so nice, I love coming back here," he says. "It's hard to put your finger on what the difference is. It's the same desire as in the US to make a good story and tell a good story, but in some ways there's just a difference that Australian crews and cast have."

"It was just a joy and easy and wonderful," he adds of filming the movie in Adelaide. "If I could shoot here all the time on the same scale that you do in America, I would, absolutely."

Escape From Pretoria was made for the cinema but releasing directly on Premium Video on Demand, and available to rent on digital platforms including Apple TV, Fetch, Foxtel and Google Play from May 22, 2020.
