Ridley Scott will soon be working on a biopic project around Napoleon Bonaparte. And the American director has already chosen who will play the former French emperor: it will be Joaquin Phoenix. The actor, Oscar winner in 2019 for his role in "Joker" previously worked with Ridley Scott on the film "Gladiator", released in 2000, which launched his career.

It is Joaquin Phoenix who will play Napoleon Bonaparte in the future film by Ridley Scott. The information, relayed by Deadline Wednesday, October 14, complements the few information already communicated on the biopic in preparation.

Joaquin Phoenix will portray Napoleon Bonaparte in Kitbag , the upcoming biopic by British director Ridley Scott . Kitbag is in the early stages of planning at Disney’s 20th Century Studios. The project will be directed and produced by Scott through his Scott Free production company with Kevin Walsh

The film, being written by screenwriter David Scarpa, will be titled Kitbag. This title comes from a military saying that "There is a staff hidden in every soldier's package" , reports the HuffPost . The biopic of American director will follow Napoleon Bonaparte's journey to Empire as well as his romantic relationship with Joséphine de Beauharnais.

Two more films in the works

Joaquin Phoenix, Oscar winner in 2019 for his breathtaking role in Joker, has previously worked with Ridley Scott. It was even his role as Commodus in Gladiator, released in 2000, that made him famous. The film received five Oscars and Joaquin Phoenix was nominated in the Best Supporting Actor category.

Kitbag will not be immediately visible in dark rooms. Ridley Scott is still working on his next film, The Last Duel, which is due out in October 2021. The feature film will tell the story of the very last legal duel in France. The director then wants to focus on a film project around the assassination of Maurizio Gucci, grandson and heir to the creator of the luxury brand.
