Behind the scenes of 'Rush Hour'
September 18 marks twenty two years since the release of Jackie Chan's iconic comedy 'Rush Hour'. Can you believe it? Jackie and his acting partner Chris Tucker had a lot of fun making the classic American film series. No wonder they were keen to make two sequels in 2003 and 2007 respectively! Here's a little look back at what happened behind the scenes of the franchise...

A trip to Africa
Director Brett Ratner, who was already a major player in Hollywood, had to fly to South Africa for just one day to meet Jackie Chan and convince him to do the movie. Ratner proposed a couple of different movie scripts to Chan, but they ultimately decided to do ‘Rush Hour’ as Jackie wanted to do a film that was more action based than story led.

Tucker wasn't the first choice
Although Jackie Chan was Ratner's favorite to play Inspector Lee, he wasn't half as sure about casting Chris Tucker as Detective Carter. His first choice was actually Eddie Murphy, who politely declined the role. Will Smith and Martin Lawrence were also considered to play Carter.

The language barrier
When filming started for 'Rush Hour', Chris Tucker was scared that it would be difficult to work with Jackie Chan because of the language barrier. Tucker said at the time, "How can we be funny if we can't even talk to each other?" Perhaps his concerns were valid, as sometimes he and Jackie needed an interpreter to understand one another. Allegedly, the joke in ‘Rush Hour 2’, when Chris says to Jackie,“Don’t nobody understand the words that are coming out of your mouth, man?” was inspired by the real, on-set language barrier. Jackie, in contrast, said that ‘Rush Hour’ really helped him improve his English skills.

Chris Tucker improvised a lot
Jackie claimed that as his English was quite weak at the time, he had to memorise not only his own, but Chris’ lines too. However, Chris was making things up every single time and the dialogues were different. Jackie later said that for him it was one of the hardest things to deal with on set.

References to other movies
Bret Ratner, the film director, was already a big fan of Jackie Chan and his performances both as an actor and as a martial artist. There are a few nods to Jackie Chan’s old Hong Kong movies, including the ‘Police Story’ franchise and ‘Mr. Nice Guy’, which are easy to recognise if you have watched the original movies. For example, the moment when Jackie accidentally grabs Tania Johnson’s breasts is a reference to ‘Mr. Nice Guy’.

Safety comes first
After working on film sets in Hong Kong and doing nearly all of his own stunts, Jackie was shocked to see the precautions Western film crews took. When he saw that the crew had built scaffolding on the other side of the window for a stunt, Jackie shook his head and said, “You Americans ... so safe!”. During the scene, he was supposed to jump from a tree into the Chinese Embassy through a window that was almost ten meters up. Actually, Terry Leonard, the stunt coordinator, later admitted that Jackie could’ve easily done it on his own, but safety first right?

Chris' karaoke night inspired a scene
During the first ‘Rush Hour’ premiere in Hong Kong, Jackie Chan invited co-star Chris Tucker to a karaoke bar with his friends after the event. Apparently, Tucker turned out to be a passionate singer and performed Michael Jackson tracks for about four hours straight! The memorable scene in the Hong Kong karaoke bar where Detective Carter sings the Michael Jackson’s ‘Don’t Stop Til You Get Enough’ was inspired by that night.

Cheadle wanted to fight Chan
Don Cheadle, who plays ex-convict and owner of a Chinese restaurant Kenny in 'Rush Hour 2', is not credited in the movie. Revealing why, director Brett Ratner revealed why, when he said: “I offered him the role thinking there’s no way he’s gonna do it. But he told me, ‘I’ll do it on two conditions. One, I can only speak in Chinese, and two, I get to fight Jackie Chan”. Don really got into character, learning martial arts for this role. Oh, and apparently his Chinese wasn't bad and Jackie was very impressed by his linguistic skills.

Fun at the Eiffel Tower
In ‘Rush Hour 3’, Inspector Lee and Detective Carter chased a criminal up the Eiffel Tower in Paris. While filming, the cast and crew had exclusive access to the Eiffel Tower for an entire week. Chris Tucker and Jackie Chan had a lot of fun and were able to turn the lights of the tower on and off whenever they wanted - even early in the morning.

Jackie did it for the money
Chan says that the ‘Rush Hour’ franchise is the movie series he dislikes the most from his career. But that may be because he doesn’t understand American humour, or the American audience’s movie taste. He said: “I dislike ‘Rush Hour’ the most, but ironically it sold really well in the US and Europe”. He also added that the main reason he agreed to this role was the fact that Ratner offered him a very big amount of money. Well, at least he is being honest!

The writer apologised to fans for taking so long to turn the novel into a movie.
Barker also admitted that his publishers didn't have any faith in the project before it was released in the 90s.
Speaking to Collider, he said: "I’m sorry it’s been so long coming, but it’s on its way. It’s on the slow train. When I gave the novel to my publishers, they said, 'This is for kids.' I said, 'Yeah.' And they said, 'Well, we’re not gonna have it.'
"They gave me an advance of a dollar because they didn’t have any faith in it. There are a lot of people who like the rest of my stuff that find 'The Thief of Always' to be a nice, quick read, and it’s nice to have people handing it down to their kids."
