The Constitution Is On Pause in America’s Courtrooms

The Constitution Is On Pause in America’s Courtrooms Seven months into the pandemic, courts around the country are beginning to restart their criminal dockets. But the practical obstacles are staggering. For example, is the courthouse spacious enough for jurors to socially distance? Are the courts’ technological systems capable of supporting remote testimony or deliberations? For now, many courts are consumed, understandably, by these concrete challenges.

The idea for their vegan crackers came to the Aho-Bio founders while they were working on an island in the middle of a freshwater lake in Latin America. Birth was also studying philosophy via distance learning and happened to come across a 2,000 year old recipe for a sun-dried flat bread made from grain sprouts. Back in Germany, the two friends turned this recipe into business. What is particularly important to both of them: The sustainable approach should encompass Aho's entire value chain. The ingredients for their crackers are grown locally, and the packaging for their superfoods is compostable. A tree is also planted for every product sold.

with Aho-Bio. As the founders already sell their superfood through their online shop, but want to scale the product even more, they have come to the " Lions' Den ". In the final of the eighth DHDL season, Wies and Birth fought for a deal. They wanted to collect an investment of 75,000 euros in exchange for 15 percent of their company shares. The two founders pitched ahead of Carsten Maschmeyer , Georg Kofler, Nils Glagau, Dagmar Wöhrl and Ralf Dümmel.

In the show, however, there was no deal for the Aho-Bio founders. The reason given by the lions: The idea is good, but the lions just didn't like the product. In an interview with t3n, Jannis Birth reveals why he still believes in Aho-Bio and what happens behind the scenes at the founding show. One thing is certain for the two founders: Just because there was no deal with DHDL, they would still have this experience again and again.

The feedback from the lions was surprising.

Birth states that they were still surprised at the negative feedback on the product. However, he also knows that none of the lions belong to the classic target group of Aho-Bio. "We actually tend to address younger customers with a different awareness of the products," he states. “Sure, if I only want the taste, I can also eat potato chips.” But if you really want to have a nutritious snack, then the Aho organic crackers are exactly the right mix of healthy and tasty. At least that is what the customers reflected to the makers of Aho-Bio.

In the meantime, there are not only crackers in the start-up's online shop, the product range has also been expanded to include unprocessed superfoods such as hemp seeds and sunflower seeds and 's own pasta made from ancient grains is now also available. The founders of the start-up raised working capital privately to cope with increased demand. Birth said they had prepared for a possible rush.

But how was it really at DHDL?

“We didn't apply to DHDL ourselves,” says Birth. “An editor approached us and asked us if we wanted to be there.” At first, the startup was of course a little skeptical. Even then, the founders asked themselves: “What if they make us look really bad on TV?” No unjustified worry, after all, there have been a few pitches in the history of the TV show in which the startups from both the lions and the spectators were torn apart. But it is precisely these pitches that the Aho-Bio founders looked at and did their own research. You talked to all those startups that either had a poorly positive public image or did not get a deal. All DHDL participants, with whom the two spoke, agreed: They would keep going on the show.

“Overall, the show is much more real than you think.”

The Aho-Bio founders have finally agreed to the production company for “Die Höhle der Löwen” . "Overall, the show is a lot more real than you think," says Birth. "You can only see a few minutes of the pitch, but actually you stand there an hour or two in front of the lions". So there are actually detailed discussions about products and investment cases. However, it is true when Twitter users criticize the founders' sometimes poor acting skills. : The first few minutes of a founder's appearance are completely scripted. And mostly not by the founders themselves, the pitches are written by an editorial team.

"We sent our pitch to the editors as a proposal, which was then changed a good ten thousand times," recalls Birth of the preparations for the show and laughs. “In the end we got the final pitch shortly before the show. In fact, it was most similar to our original proposal. ”

It was not the lions that convinced, but the TV producers

The preparations for the show were already an enormous effort. “We practiced our pitch for hours,” says Birth. However, the preparations for a possible funding made up a rather small part. Because according to Birth, the investment is not the only thing that counts: “Convincing the lions is the unimportant part of the show. It is actually much more important that you convince the people behind the camera of you. After all, in the end they decide how much and whether you get airtime at all. ”Would the two founders go back to DHDL? “Definitely!”
