Recalling her conversation with Netflix co-CEO Ted Sarandos, Shonda explained: "The first thing I said was, 'You're not going to get another 'Grey's Anatomy' - not 'Grey's Anatomy' in a cornfield, 'Grey's Anatomy' on a baseball field or 'Grey's Anatomy' at an airport, that's just not happening.'"
Shonda was eager to make shows for her own enjoyment, having felt limited by the demands and the pace of the network TV business.

Sheldon's funniest moments
'The Big Bang Theory' first aired on September 24, 2007 on CBS. From the lullaby Soft Kitty to 'Rock, Paper, Scissors, Lizard, Spock', Sheldon, Leonard, Penny, Raj and Howard kept audiences entertained with their geeky passions, ingenious ideas, jokes and mishaps for 12 Seasons before ending in May 2019. But no character in the series is (possibly) as funny as genius Sheldon, thanks to his lack of understanding of irony and very peculiar habits. Here are Dr. Cooper's funniest moments...

Sheldon is sick
When Sheldon caught a cold from Penny in Season 1, episode 11, he became more reliant than ever on his friends. When Sheldon shouted “Leonard, I’m sick”, Leonard decided to get out of there as quickly as possible under the auspices of work on a Sunday morning. Penny ended up caring for Sheldon and had to sing the lullaby Soft Kitty to him as his mother used to.

My sofa spot!
When the friends play paintball in Season 2, episode 16 it all goes wrong for Sheldon. Sheldon has placed his “spot” on the sofa "in a state of eternal dibs” and if anyone even dares to just sit there, they can expect to feel his anger. Caffeine hit
Sheldon had always avoided caffeine and we found out why in Season 2, episode 18, when Sheldon succumbed to having one to finish making Penny’s blossom hair clips before her deadline. After one coffee, Sheldon was hyper and entirely useless to the group’s mission. But when he found out that there was no more coffee in the apartment to feed his new-found caffeine addiction, he suddenly transformed into The Flash looking for his next cup.

Ball pit of bazinga
Sheldon’s childish side is never far away, but in Season 3, episode 14, when he broke into the ball pit in a nearby shopping centre, this was amplified. Sheldon was sleep deprived after trying to work out a scientific problem all night and his deprivation had driven him to madness. In his tired state, he thought he could solve it in a ball pit. Leonard was called to tame the crazed Sheldon, but when he tried to bring him home, Sheldon said, “You can try but you’ll never catch him” and jumps back into the balls.

Sheldon got drunk
We had already seen Sheldon drunk a couple of times before, so when Penny gave him some wine to calm his nerves before his speech in Season 3, episode 18, viewers knew they could expect some hilarious scenes. When Sheldon took to the stage, he was so inebriated that he told jokes and took his trousers off. To make it worse, and even funnier, Sheldon had entirely forgotten what happened the night before until he noticed his lack or trousers saw the video posted online.

Fun with flags
What could be more interesting than flags? And everyone knows that information presented in a fun way helps you to remember it better, right? Enter, Amy and Sheldon’s vodcast, ‘Sheldon Cooper presents: Fun with Flags’. The pair introduced their show in Season 5, episode 14, by describing it as a mixture of fun and information and planned to release an episode per week for a year. They then quickly got to work analysing the only two-sided state flag, the Oregon flag. Sheldon’s serious vexillology facts and Amy’s over- excitement made for much hilarity.

Meeting Stephen Hawking
Sheldon’s life-long dream came true in Season 5, episode 21 when he met the acclaimed theoretical physicist, Stephen Hawking. After convincing Howard to let him see the scientist, Sheldon excitedly showed off his work to Hawking, only for him to point out a mathematical error straightaway. Sheldon was mortified and fell to the floor and Hawking said via his speech machine, “Great, another fainter.”

I love you too
In Season 8, episode 8, the gang decide to recreate prom night, after not having memorable ones as teenagers. To make the evening even more special, when Amy decided she wanted to tell Sheldon she loved him, he interjected with, “I love you too”. Of course, this being Sheldon, the cute moment didn’t last too long and when Amy ran into his room freaking out he insisted, “Just because I love you doesn’t mean girls are allowed in my room.”

En garde!
The guys decided to become more active, in Season 9, episode 5. Unused to exercise, the group took up fencing at Kripke’s club. After much joking around, and some practice saying “en garde”, Sheldon asked when he could stab one of his friends. Kripke told him the fencing term is “touch”. And Sheldon then replied, “If I say I am going to touch one of my friends, I'll get sent to Human Resources again."

A birthday surprise
A big moment for 'Shamy' was when the couple finally slept together in Season 9, episode 11. And of course, knowing Sheldon and Amy, the moment was just as funny as it was cute. After the big event, they lay in bed looking very happy with themselves and Sheldon said, “Well, I enjoyed that more than I thought I would,” and promised Amy they would make this an annual event for her birthday.

Roaring or yawning? Incredible sleepy wildlife moments
Yawning occurs in just about every vertebrate animal. And yawning in many animals, including birds, is frequently associated with drowsiness. But not exclusively. For example, while most species of birds open their beaks in a fair impression of a mammalian yawn, no one has yet proven whether or not this "jaw stretching" also regularly includes the inhalation and exhalation of air. Some species of penguin employ yawning as part as part of their courtship ritual. And for other noisy and gregarious birds like parrots, yawning serves as a social signal. With primates, yawning is a sign of sleepiness. But a yawn can also convey complex social messages, for example, to demonstrate friendliness and aggression. Furthermore, yawning can be contagious. In humans, yawning is demonstrably contagious, as it is easily triggered by seeing, hearing, reading, or simply thinking about another individual yawning. Similarly, with primates, and especially monkeys, yawning is contagious between individuals. Anyone who owns a pet dog will know that canines often yawn after seeing people yawn. Cats also demonstrate this kind of empathy towards their owners. Cats and dogs, however, also advertise their need for sleep, and will yawn simply because they are genuinely tired and in need of rest. In the animal kingdom, many animals yawn, even creatures as diverse as fish and reptiles. Indeed, some snakes yawn after a good meal (in fact, it’s a way of realigning their jaws after eating).

The producer confessed to growing tired of the strain she was under at ABC and was therefore keen to find a new challenge.
She told The Hollywood Reporter: "I felt like I was dying. Like I'd been pushing the same ball up the same hill in the exact same way for a really long time."
Shonda also liked the idea of moving to Netflix because she knew she'd be allowed to work on ideas without being bothered by TV executives.
The acclaimed producer - who created the political thriller series 'Scandal' - said: "The reason I came to Netflix is because I wanted to be able to make television without anybody bothering me. And as long as I get to keep making television without anybody bothering me, I'm happy."
