In August 2020, Simon was left with a broken back after crashing an electric bike at his Malibu home. ‘The X Factor’ judge had to have surgery which involved inserting a metal rod into his damaged spine. 4. He was a runner on The Shining
According to an anecdote recounted by his half-brother Tony on BBC Radio 3, Simon got his first taste of Hollywood when he worked as a runner on director Stanley Kubrick’s 1980 horror film ‘The Shining’, which was filmed on Elstree Studios and starred Jack Nicholson as writer Jack Torrence, who descends into madness whilst working as the caretaker of a closed hotel. In one famous scene, Jack breaks through a door with an axe, shouting: “Here’s Johnny!” and it was a young Simon’s job to polish that axe. Tony said: “It was only a stone's throw away from where we grew up. I well remember him saying he used to clean Jack Nicholson's axe in between takes for the most famous scenes. He took great pride in it, you could see your face in it, it was so shiny.”

Simon eventually got out of the mailroom and would go on to learn the skills he needed to form his own record label in 1983.
