Entertainment MK2 is betting on on-demand, free movies with publicity

Authors' films, with free access and financed in particular by advertising: the MK2 group announced on Tuesday that it was launching a new model of video on demand platform, after a test balloon during the first confinement.

In a market dominated by subscription giants such as Netflix and Amazon Prime, the French company, producer, distributor of films and operator of theaters, is betting on offering on "MK2 Curiosity" a weekly selection of five free films.

Several French companies have embarked on similar niches, aimed at movie buffs, generally with pay-per-view or subscription to access a selection of films, such as La Cinetek or Universciné.

MK2 had tested its platform during the first containment, and claims to have allowed 250,000 views of films and short films. She decided to perpetuate this model, in particular by adding advertising and the possibility of paying to see films from past weeks.

The selection promises to be eclectic and demanding: launched on Thursday, MK2 Curiosity will notably make it possible to see or re-watch films by Nelly Kaplan, icon of the New Wave who died in early November, ("Plaisir d'Amour"), by Korean Hong Sang Soo ("Turning Gate") or even Agnès Varda ("The creatures").

At the rate of 50 programs per year, the site also promises "a complete editorial support which presents these films to the public", underlines the group, which wishes to distinguish itself from the choice by algorithm of the big platforms.

Struck like other large groups by the health crisis, MK2 surprised last April by announcing a partnership with Netflix to make available to the streaming platform a vast catalog of films by French authors, including films by François Truffaut, Jacques Demy or Alain Resnais.
