The wife of Elliot Page has come out in support of the actor, who earlier today publicly announced he was transgender.

Dancer Emma Portner applauded her spouse Elliot — who announced he would no longer be known by his birth name, Ellen Page — for speaking his truth in a candid social media post.

"I am so proud of @elliotpage," Emma wrote on Instagram following Elliot's announcement. "Trans, queer and non-binary people are a gift to this world. I also ask for patience & privacy but that you join me in the fervent support of trans life every single day. Elliot's existence is a gift in and of itself.

"Shine on sweet E. Love you so much."

Elliot Page , Academy Award-nominated star of " Juno ," has come out as transgender . "Hi friends, I want to share with you that I am trans , my pronouns are he/they and my Page , who announced in early 2018 the he married New York dance teacher Emma Portner , previously went by "Ellen."

Elliot, 33, and Emma, 26, have remained low-key about their relationship, which reportedly started back in 2017 after they were seen on multiple outings together. They then made their union official when they secretly tied the knot in January 2018.

It was earlier today that Elliot came out as a trans man in a lengthy and heartfelt statement posted to his Twitter and Instagram page.

"Hi friends, I want to share with you that I am trans, my pronouns are he/they and my name is Elliot. I feel lucky to be writing this. To be here. To have arrived at this place in my life," he wrote. "I feel overwhelming gratitude for the incredible people who have supported me along this journey. I can't begin to express how remarkable it feels to finally love who I am enough to pursue my authentic self.

Elliot became a breakout star in the 2008 movie Juno, which landed him a Best Actress nomination at the Oscars that year. He currently stars in the hit Netflix series The Umbrella Academy, which is about a  family of adopted sibling superheroes.

According to Variety, Elliot will continue to play the role of cisgender woman Vanya Hargreeves and there are no plans to change the character's gender.
