start on Friday at 6:10 a.m.

Due to a nightly exit restriction as a result of the COVID-19 pandemic, the traditional night stages of the Monte Carlo Rally will be held in the early morning this year. The first special stage of the day began at 6:10 a.m. And the 19.61 kilometer section "Aspremont - La Batie-des-Fonts 1" ensured typical "Monte" conditions not only because of the darkness, but also because of the partly snow-covered or icy roads.

Ogier coped with that best. Also in the following special stages, where the roads were only wet, the veteran played his experience to the full and can dream of an eighth victory in the "Monte", with which he would then be the sole record holder.

While Ogier got through Friday morning relatively easily, things looked different in the Hyundai warehouse. Neuville struggled with his tire choice. Three slicks and a winter tire were not the right choice in the mostly wet conditions.

Tire and engine problems with Hyundai

The Belgian kept losing time and spun on the third special stage of the day, which was partly due to another problem. "My gravel spies couldn't pass this test because there was an incident on the street. So I didn't have any corrections to my notes," reports Neuville.

His team-mate Tänak reported about other difficulties: "The engine has a problem in the hairpin bends. It is losing the boost pressure." Nevertheless, the 2019 world champion is the only Hyundai driver who can keep up with the top, because Dani Sordo in the third i20 WRC is also struggling with the handling of his car.

The best-placed driver in WRC2 is Andreas Mikkelsen, who ranks seventh overall with the Skoda Fabia used by the German Toksport WRT team. The former Volkswagen and Hyundai works driver has a lead of 23.8 seconds over Adrian Fourmaux (Ford).
