driver. You don't see close cooperation between teammates in the MotoGP that often. In the top teams in particular, teammates are primarily rivals. This is also the case with the Honda works team. Newcomer Pol Espargaro was used to working with his teammates at Tech-3-Yamaha and most recently at KTM. But that should change at Honda.

"It's completely different here at Repsol-Honda. We have a winning motorcycle. That's why there is no need to talk intensively with your teammate and help each other. The package is already very good," said Pol Espargaro in front of his first season in the Honda factory team.

Red Bull is open to production of its own F1 engines from 2025

Red Bull is open to production of its own F1 engines from 2025 © Motorsport Images Red Bull sees the takeover of Honda engines not just as a short-term project For Red Bull, the engine deal with Honda is what it takes enables the team to continue using the drive units of the Japanese even after they have left Formula 1 at the end of 2021, by no means an emergency solution. The racing team has long-term plans to set up its own engine department in Milton Keynes.

"But that doesn't mean that our relationship inside the box will be as bad as possible," the Spaniard said. "A good atmosphere inside the box is always helpful, even if you don't help each other directly."

At the beginning of his MotoGP career, Pol Espargaro shared a box with Bradley Smith for years. Espargaro and Smith also started together in the 8 Hours of Suzuka. From 2019 they parted ways. Johann Zarco took over from Bradley Smith. Last season, Pol Espargaro met rookie Brad Binder at KTM.

"It was a different situation", Pol Espargaro compares the past years in MotoGP with the future at HRC. "In my rookie season at Yamaha, I needed it because I was a newcomer. In a satellite team you have to work more closely with your teammates because you don't have the same opportunities as the works drivers."

"You have to try everything to try to be as fast as them," explains the new Honda member. "KTM was completely new to MotoGP. So we had to work very closely together again to bring everything together and try to catch up with the others."

Pol Espargaro has been competing in MotoGP since 2014. During his time as a Tech 3 pilot, the Spaniard did not make it onto the podium. The first top 3 result was achieved at the 2018 season finale. In the 2020 season, Espargaro achieved five more third places. As fifth in the World Cup, he reached his best season finish so far.
