Prince Philip is understood to have wanted reassurances on the family's situation from Prince Charles himself.
The duke is expected to remain in hospital for another few days at least.
His youngest son Prince Edward told Sky News the duke was getting frustrated in hospital.
"I think that gets to all of us, and then you can only watch the clock so many times and the walls are only so interesting," the Earl of Wessex said.
"He's looking forward to getting out, which is the most positive thing, so we keep our fingers crossed."
