Nomadland

What is it? Renowned character actor Frances McDormand — tipped as an Oscar contender for this role — plays Fern, a single, 60-something woman trying to get by in a post-industrial United States.

After losing her job in a now-shuttered Nevada mine, and her husband to cancer, she hits the road in a battered RV. Director Chloe Zhao's film, based on a non-fiction book by Jessica Bruder, tracks Fern's journey and the people she meets along the way.

Ma Rainey's Black Bottom

What is it? Based on the play by Pulitzer Prize winner August Wilson, Ma Rainey's Black Bottom is set in 1920s Chicago and stars Viola Davis as the legendary "Mother of the Blues".

She goes head to head with a young horn player, played by the late Chadwick Boseman, and her white and controlling management team.

Borat Subsequent Moviefilm

What is it? The sequel to Sacha Baron Cohen's original mockumentary from 2006.

Kazakhstan's most famous journalist returns to the US, this time bearing a gift (Borat's 15-year-old daughter) for vice-president Mike Pence that Borat hopes will redeem his country in the eyes of the world.

Borat creator Sacha Baron Cohen said if his film didn't win, he had "already hired Rudy Giuliani to contest the results" — a nod to a scene in the film where Donald Trump's lawyer appears in a hotel room in a compromising position.

The Crown

What is it? A rich drama chronicling the life of Queen Elizabeth II and the internal and external pressures that come with being a British royal.

What is it? Voiced by Jamie Foxx, New York teacher and jazz pianist Joe finds himself trapped in a strange land between Earth and the afterlife just after scoring the gig he's been waiting all his life for.

While he's desperately trying to literally get his life back, he meets some unlikely friends and finds some unlikely perspective.

Joe is Disney-Pixar's first black lead character, and Foxx told Variety it was "amazing" to play a part in that.

Soul scored Golden Globes for both best animated picture and best score in a motion picture.

Where can I watch it? Soul is on Disney+.

Schitt's Creek

What is it? As the ABC's Hannah Reich wrote last year, "a wealthy family falls on hard times and is forced to relocate to a small, shabby town with a very punny name."

What is it? One of many winners set in Chicago, this all-star cast follows seven people on trial for various charges linked to the 1968 Democratic National Convention.

Eddie Redmayne, Sacha Baron Cohen, Joseph Gordon-Levitt, Frank Langella and Michael Keaton are just some of the big names on the line-up, under the direction of Aaron Sorkin.

Described by the HFPA as an "unexpectedly timely" film, The Trial of the Chicago 7 scored five Golden Globe nominations, with Sorkin taking out the win for best screenplay in a motion picture.

Where can I watch it? Netflix.

I Care A Lot

What is it? Rosamund Pike, Peter Dinklage and Dianne Wiest star in the story of a crooked legal guardian who drains the savings of her elderly wards.

She soon finds out that her latest target is more than meets the eye.

Pike scored the Golden Globe for best actress in a motion picture musical or comedy for her role as Marla Grayson — her first Golden Globe win from three nominations.

The Queen's Gambit

What is it? It's the series that sparked a massive resurgence in chess, for starters.

Anya Taylor-Joy plays Beth Harmon, an introverted orphan who becomes a child chess master who grows up dealing with significant pressures.

Adapted from the novel by Walter Tevis, The Queen's Gambit was watched by 62 million households in its first 28 days up on Netflix and saw inspired chess novices find a new love for the game (especially girls).

The film won best television motion picture, and Taylor-Joy picked up best actress in a television motion picture for the leading role.

I Know This Much Is True

What is it?: Mark Ruffalo plays twin brothers Dominick and Thomas Birdsey in this mini-series based on the 1998 novel by Wally Lamb.

The story of betrayal, sacrifice and forgiveness follows the twins' parallel lives.

Ruffalo picked up the Golden Globe for best actor in a television motion picture for his double role.

Where can I watch it? Stream it on Foxtel On Demand or Binge.

The Mauritanian

What is it? The Mauritanian is based on a true story with a larger-than-life cast.

It follows the story of a man imprisoned in Guantanamo Bay without trial, who finds allies in a defence attorney and her associate.

Tahar Rahim was nominated for best actor in a motion picture drama, and Jodie Foster won best supporting actress for her performance.

Where can I watch it? It's coming to Amazon Prime Video later this month.

The United States vs Billie Holiday

What is it? Andra Day plays iconic jazz musician Billie Holiday in this Hulu original and biographical drama.

The real winner of the Golden Globes was Regina King's dog Cornbread

That's the name of Regina King's dog who was seemed to win the hearts of viewers during the Golden Globes pre-show. Small Axe

What is it? Small Axe is based on the real-life experiences of London's West Indian community, particularly around race.

Set between 1969 and 1982, the mini-series featuring five short films stars Naomi Ackie, Neal Barry and Gary Beadle, and picked up a nomination for best television motion picture.

John Boyega won best supporting actor (television) for his performance as Leroy Logan.

Where can I watch it? Catch it on Binge or Amazon Prime Video.

Judas and the Black Messiah

What is it? Judas and the Black Messiah tells the story of the betrayal of the chairman of the Black Panther Party, Fred Hampton.

FBI informant Bill O'Neal, played by LaKeith Stanfield, infiltrates the Illinois Black Panthers and is tasked with keeping tabs on their charismatic leader, played by Daniel Kaluuya, in 1960s Chicago.

Kalyuuya took out the Golden Globe for best performance by an actor in a supporting role for his powerful portrayal, and the film also picked up a nomination for best song in a motion picture.

Where can I watch it? It'll be in Aussie cinemas from March 11.

Minari

What is it? Minari is an American-made film directed by Lee Isaac Chung which follows a Korean family who move to a farm in Arkansas to pursue the American dream.

The family speak Korean, but English is spoken throughout the film, both by the family and in their interactions with neighbours, which prompted some questions from critics and fans about why it made it into the foreign language category of the awards.

Minari went on to win best foreign language picture in this year's Golden Globes, and is one of many winners that's generating some Oscars buzz as well.

She forms an unlikely friendship with a street kid when she takes him in after he robs her.

Starring Sophia Loren, The Life Ahead was nominated for best foreign language film but was beat out by Minari.

It did win best song in a motion picture for Io Sì (Seen).

Where can I watch it? Netflix.

Ted Lasso

What is it? Jason Sudeikis plays a small-time American football coach who heads to the UK to manage a struggling London soccer team.

The slightly clueless American learns a thing or two about football of the English variety and about community along the way.

Sudeikis won best television actor in a musical or comedy series, and the movie was also nominated for best musical/comedy series.

Where can I watch it? Apple TV+.
