For Geelong-based former radio announcer Jac Bowie, it proved the perfect opportunity to try and get some answers from her father who lives in Dubai and who she hadn't seen for years.

"It just struck a chord with me and I thought I'd apply," she said.

"I'd met my father when I was 13, I'm 37 now, and have been over to him in Dubai twice but it just wasn't enough. I wanted him to understand that he's got a whole family over here and I'd love to have him as part of my life, especially as I lost my Mum a couple of years ago."

COMMENT: Before Jarryd Hayne demands 'the truth' from the media, he should first look at himself Oh, the Hayne Plane. Always with the drama. Gold Coast Titans star Jarryd Hayne stepped forward on Wednesday to put those pesky reporters back in their box, claiming he had nothing to do with the demise of coach Neil Henry, who was sacked earlier this week. He then accused Henry of leaking stories about him to NRL 360's Paul Kent.It was an extraordinary slur on his former coach. It could also cost him a whack of money if it's not right. Kent denies Henry leaked him anything about Hayne.

Bowie first spoke to her father over the phone when she was 14, and for a few years the two sent letters to each other via fax. Finally, when she was in her late 20s, she took her first trip over to Dubai to meet him.

"It was amazing. I'm really grateful I went at that age. I'd had a child at 24, and he was 21 when he had me and that was a lot to take on as a 21 year old, so I got that. We had a great few weeks, we had so much fun and discovered we are very similar," she said.

The urge to spend more time with her father grew after that, but their contact remained limited and her father never visited her in Australia. Bowie said Look Me In The Eye seemed like an opportunity to finally get her dad to face her and resolve some of those underlying issues.

Although she wasn't even sure he'd agree to take part in it.

"You can't ever be sure with him as history tells me. In the weird kind of timing of everything, and we didn't know this going into it, when he came out he was able to see his brother-in-law just before he died of cancer. The timing was incredible for us in that he was able to go and be there for his sister," she said.

The pair are featured in the SBS six-part series, encouraging estranged people to sit and look into each other's eyes in silence and for Bowie, it's had a positive effect.

"It helped us to clear the air and talk about things that need to be talked about but also he met his grandchildren.

*Look Me In The Eye premieres on September 6 at 8.30pm (AEST) on SBS.
