Prince Philip's funeral will be a sedate affair compared to the two most recent memorials for royal spouses — Princess Diana in 1997 and the Queen Mother in 2002.
Both services were held in Westminster Abbey, after a procession through London with a throng of mourners lining the streets to pay their respects.
One of the most memorable moments in Diana's service — her sons walking behind her coffin — was.
As the Queen Mother lay in state at Westminster Abbey, queues of mourners wanting to pay respects grew so long the church was opened 24 hours a day.
In contrast, Prince Philip — who reportedly once said to the Queen "just stick me in the back of a Land Rover and drive me to Windsor" — is getting his wish for a "no fuss" funeral.

After the funeral service today — at which his coffin will arrive in a— Prince Philip will be laid to rest in the Royal Vault at St George’s Chapel.
Typically, coffins are lowered into the Royal Vault via electric motor, but it's not clear whether this will be captured by the BBC broadcast or kept as a private moment for the family.
Three kings are buried in the vault — George III, George IV and William IV — along with around 20 other royal family members.
However, it's only a temporary location for Philip — and it's not the first time someone from his family has been in that situation.
His mother, Princess Alice of Battenberg, was laid to rest there on her death in 1969. However, her body was transferred to the Convent of Saint Mary Magdalene in Jerusalem in 1988, honouring her wishes.
She was laid to rest near her aunt Grand Duchess Elizabeth Feodorovna, who is also a Russian Orthodox saint.

What happens when the Queen dies?
When the Queen dies, she will also be buried in the King George VI Memorial Chapel and her husband will be moved beside her.
It's a tribute to the bonds she had with her parents and sister, who were very important to her.
The Chapel was built after the death of the Queen's father, King George VI. He was its only tomb until the death of his wife, the Queen Mother, in 2002. But when she was interred with her husband, she didn't arrive alone.
Her youngest daughter, Princess Margaret, had died six weeks earlier.
She wanted to be buried with her parents, according to her lady-in-waiting Anne, Lady Glenconner, which guided her unusual final wishes for a royal.
"Princess Margaret was cremated, one of the first members of the royal family, because she wanted to be buried between her parents and there was only room, really, for ashes," she said in the documentary Elizabeth: Our Queen.
Where else are royals buried?
While royal funerals are still often held at Westminster Abbey, the last monarch to be buried there was George II, who died in 1760. He was buried in the vault he had constructed as the final resting place for his wife, Caroline, and on his request the sides of their coffins were reportedly removed so their dust could mingle.

After George II, monarchs were laid to rest at Windsor. There are two main locations: St George’s Chapel — where Prince Philip's funeral and interment will take place — and the Royal Burial Ground, Frogmore.
The latter was consecrated in 1928 — around the Royal Mausoleum, the final resting place of Queen Victoria and Prince Albert — when St George's Chapel was becoming full. In fact, some members of the royal family were moved to the cemetery in 1928.
Once Frogmore was in service, King George V decreed that only monarchs and their consorts — and those in the direct line of succession — could be buried in the Royal Vault in St George's Chapel.
There are a number of royals still buried in St George's Chapel: five, including Henry VIII and his third wife Jane Seymour and Charles I, are buried in vaults beneath the choir. Five are in tombs in the Chapel.
