This wasn't to be, with Charles soon matched with Diana Spencer, the daughter of family friends.

Prince Charles first met Diana as a 16-year-old during a visit to Althorp, the Spencer family home. The 29-year-old prince was friends with her older sister, then Lady Sarah Spencer; they began dating but the relationship was short-lived.
