In the early naughties, Mischa Barton was the ultimate It Girl. The young actress had small but memorable cameos in Notting Hill and The Sixth Sense before she landed the role of a lifetime.

In 2003, Barton was cast as Marissa Cooper in The O.C. and instantly became one of the most famous teenagers in the world. The series ran for three years but cemented Barton as an actress to watch.

However, when the show killed off her character at the end of Season 3, Barton fell off the radar, leaving many fans wondering what happened to the talented star.

What has Mischa Barton said about The O.C.?

Barton finally explained her 2006 exit from the hit TV show.

"I've always felt ashamed in a way to really talk about what went on behind the scenes... Now that we're living in this era where we do speak out about our experiences and women do come clean about what was really going on... and how they were treated, it's a slightly different thing," Barton told E! News on May 19.

The actress revealed there were early talks of killing off her character when Rachel Bilson became a series regular.

"[There was] sort of general bullying from some of the men on set that kind of felt really s---ty," she said. "But, you know, I also loved the show and had to build up my own walls and ways of getting around dealing with that and the fame that was thrust specifically at me."

She added, "Just dealing with like the amount of invasion I was having in my personal life, I just felt very unprotected, I guess is the best way to put it."

The Fight to Preserve Greenwood

The Fight to Preserve Greenwood One hundred years after the Tulsa Race Massacre, community members still can’t get the federal government to recognize their neighborhood’s significance. In 2003, a legal team sued the city of Tulsa, the Tulsa Police Department, and the state of Oklahoma on behalf of more than 300 of the massacre’s survivors and survivors’ descendants. After their letter reached Nails-Alford, she drove to Greenwood and walked up and down the streets, just like she had as a kid. Her memories suddenly felt haunted.

Midway through the second season, Barton was given two options from the producers.

She recalled them saying, "Well, do you want your job and to sail off into the sunset and potentially you can come back in the future in some bizarre TV scenario or we can kill your character off and you can go on with your career that you want and what you want to do?"

What is Mischa Barton doing now?

Since The O.C. ended in 2006, Barton has only had a handful of roles.

Prior to joining the original cast of The Hills for a reboot, Barton's roles included parts in Virgin Territory (2007), Assassination of a Highschool President (2008), and Ashton Kutcher's short-lived TV Series The Beautiful Life (2009). In 2016, she joined the cast of Dancing With The Stars.

But it was her personal life and party girl ways that made headlines over the years.
