Gallery: Maneskin conquer Eurovision! But who are the Italian rock band? (BANG Showbiz)
Rock and roll will never die!
Maneskin from Italy stunned everyone by winning the Eurovision Song Contest 2021 trophy last weekend. They snatched the lead from France with 524 points, thanks to the last minute public votes. We have seen them perform, laugh and triumph, but who is really this Italian band that conquered the hearts of many? Here are 10 things you didn’t know about Maneskin…
This band is made up of four young musicians. The frontman, Damiano David, is 22 and the most controversial member of the band. He isn’t afraid of going full ‘rock and roll style’. Because of his reckless attitude, he’s made numerous headlines in the Italian newspapers. The bass player, Victoria De Angelis, 21, found her love of music very early on. She was just eight when she began to play bass guitar. Then, a few years later, she also became passionate about bass. Guitarist Thomas Raggi is 20 and started playing the instrument as a youngster. Ethan Torchio, 20, is the drummer of the band.
The band started in middle school
Victoria and Ethan first met and shared their love for music in middle school. However, the band was formed only years later, when in 2015 the lead singer joined in. Though a Facebook ad, they recruited the last member of the band: Ethan as drummer of the band. They all grew up in Rome and went to the same high school, J.F Kennedy, in Italy’s capital. The name of the band derives from Danish, Victoria’s mother language, and it means moonlight.
They started off as buskers
When in high school Maneskin began their musical journey busking on the streets of Rome, humble beginnings which led them to the pyrotechnics and bright lights of the Eurovision Song Contest stage. This is how the band started off: as street performers who would delight the busy capital with their songs.
They hit the road
One year after their appearance on 'The X Factor', the band was ready to make it big. They were guests on the Italian ‘Saturday Night Live’. They performed at different events all over Italy, such as the RadioItaliaLive and the Wind Summer Festival, until they started touring around the country. As part of their tour, they also opened for international band Imagine Dragons, for their Milan concert.
They made a documentary
After having released three singles in the space of 12 months, Maneskin came out with their first album, ‘Il Ballo della Vita’, in 2018. To promote the LP, Italian cinemas hosted a special showing of ‘This is Maneskin’, a documentary about the band. The short film recounts the band’s personality through experiences, dreams and conflicts. By tracing their steps from 'The X Factor' stages to the first tour, the documentary unveils their desire to express themselves through music.
They can't stop selling out shows
Their first European tour, showcasing the new album, took the band to every main city in Europe. Every stop of the tour was sold out, which brought the decision of extending the original list of cities the tour was going to take place.
They won Sanremo despite their song
The band made it to the prestigious Italian Song Contest in 2021, after they were selected by Italian TV presenter and Sanremo artistic director Amedeus in December 2020. The band competed against 25 other Italian songs and came out on top. Until the last minutes of the Sanremo finale, nobody could have predicted that Maneskin would have won. The band was competing against Italian rapper Fedez, who happened to be at 'X Factor' with them years earlier, as a judge. The surprise for the win mainly came from how different ‘Zitti e buoni’ is from more traditional Sanremo songs. The band also agreed, saying: “We knew that the song was not ideal for the standards of Sanremo, but we wanted it to stand as a representation of our journey. It shocked us how quickly people got it.”
The band court controversy
Since their appearance at Sanremo, the band has stirred rumours and anger from the public because of their unconventional looks and personality. During their time at the Italian Song Contest, Maneskin’s social media started shooting out heavy comments on fellow Italian artists. They took to Instagram to send several messages about Fiorello, the Italian comedian who was presenting Sanremo, Laura Pausini and Amadeus, Sanremo’s artistic director. All the comments were very harsh and critical towards their targets and these words left social media users conflicted. Some started hating on the band’s presumptuousness and others thought their socials had been hacked. It turned out to be a weird strategy from the band’s social media manager. The post explaining the social media campaign said: “Good evening, as you know Maneskin are busy at #Sanremo2021. In the meantime they have entrusted this Twitter profile to @God who will reciprocate their gesture of good faith by making big messes, as per rock tradition. Come on, get to work."
Bruce has also teased his fans they will have something to look forward to this autumn.

"We have something that is going to come out in the fall.
"I have got projects I have been working on … We worked on a lot of things from the vault. I will let it be a surprise."
Bruce's Killers collaboration comments came just after the band tasked fans with guessing which star they could be working with.
They wrote on Twitter: "We’re announcing a killer collab (pun intended) later this week, but you’ve got to figure out who it’s with. Be on the lookout for clues in coming posts. The first 200 Victims who guess correctly will get early access to the video. Submit your guess: http://thekillersmusic.com/guessthefeature (sic)"
But just five hours later, The Killers confessed the collaboration is with Bruce, following his interview comments.
They tweeted: "Looks like the cat’s out of the bag. When The Boss decides it’s time to make an announcement, it’s time to make an announcement."
