Mary Simon spoke last Thursday with Queen Elizabeth II by videoconference because of the pandemic. It is appointed for five years, but the duration of its mainly honorary mandate is at the discretion of the Queen.
The former activist for the rights of Aboriginal people succeeds Julie Payette, who resigned in January after accusations of harassment within his office.
