Paul McCartney has taken to Instagram yesterday to honour John Lennon on what would have been the music icon's 81st birthday.

In the black-and-white photo, the two Beatle's stars are pictured playing around together with guitars in hand. McCartney shared the rare image with the caption "Happy Birthday thoughts for John - Paul".

McCartney wasn't the only person to pay tribute to the 'Imagine' singer.

Lennon, who was tragically murdered at age 40 by Mark Chapman, was fondly remembered by his wife Yoko Ono in a touching photo, in which he is pictured with son, Sean, blowing out birthday candles. Lennon and his son share a birthday.

Last December, Ono took to twitter to honour Lennon on the 40th anniversary of his death.

Alongside a statistic around gun violence, she wrote, "The death of a loved one is a hollowing experience. After 40 years, Sean, Julian and I still miss him. 'Imagine all the people living life in peace.'"

McCartney also paid homage to the singer, sharing a photo of the pair with the caption "A sad sad day but remembering my friend John with the great joy he brought to the world. I will always be proud and happy to have known and worked with this incredible Scouser!"
