Prince Harry's absence from a party honouring his late mother in London is a "missed opportunity" to repair the rift with Prince William, a royal author has claimed.

It's also "further confirmation" that "things are not great between the brothers" with William said to be still feeling hurt by Meghan's attack towards Kate, the Duchess of Cambridge, in the Oprah interview.

The Duke of Sussex chose not to return to England for the gathering at Kensington Palace on October 19, after it was rescheduled from earlier this year due to coronavirus restrictions.

It was expected to be attended by Prince William and some of Princess Diana's friends, former staff and Spencer family members.

The gathering, for 100 guests, was to thank donors who helped fund the statue of Diana installed within the Sunken Garden, including Sir Elton John and David Furnish.

Duncan Larcombe, author of the 2017 book Prince Harry: The Inside Story says the Duke could have attended had he really wanted to.

"Obviously he lives a long way away now and we've still got travel restrictions but it's entirely possible for him to fly back to the UK, as he showed in July for the unveiling of the statue," Larcombe told OK! Magazine.

What to expect from the christening of Prince Harry and Meghan's daughter Lilibet Diana

What to expect from the christening of Prince Harry and Meghan's daughter Lilibet Diana The christening of Prince Harry and Meghan's daughter is likely to break from royal tradition as the couple shun the old ways embraced by the monarchy. Lilibet Diana was born on June 4 but the Duke and Duchess of Sussex have so far kept everything about her private. No photos of the baby, who is eighth-in-line to the British throne, have been shared publicly. Lilibet's baptism is expected to be very different from that of her older brother Archie Harrison Mountbatten-Windsor, which also marked a separation from how things had been done by the royal family for generations. However, members of the royal family not need to be baptised to remain in the line of succession.

"Both of Diana's sons should be there. Unfortunately, it's just further confirmation - not that another is needed - that things are not great between the brothers.
