'Rust' shooting: assistant director previously sacked over gun safety The assistant director who handed Alec Baldwin the loaded weapon that killed a cinematographer had been sacked from a previous production for gun safety violations, the company said Monday. Hutchins was killed Thursday on the set of low-budget Western "Rust" when Baldwin fired a weapon that assistant director Dave Halls had told him was safe, using the industry lingo "cold gun."The news came as it was reported that crew members had used that same weapon for live-ammunition target practice on the day Halyna Hutchins died.

The director of Rust has issued his first statement following his hospitalisation for a gunshot wound from a prop firearm fired by Alec Baldwin that killed the film’s director of photography. “I am gutted by the loss of my friend and colleague, Halyna ,” Joel Souza said in a statement first obtained by “ She was kind, vibrant, incredibly talented, fought for every inch, and always pushed me to be better .” He added that he is “humbled and grateful by the outpouring of affection we have received from our filmmaking community, the people of Santa Fe, and the hundreds of strangers who have reached out.”

What made 'Rust' crew members walk off set the morning of Halyna Hutchins' death? .
The day Alec Baldwin was involved in an accidental shooting incident on the set of “Rust” was a particularly eventful one after several disgruntled camera crew members walked off the set. Halyna Hutchins was present when a gun Baldwin was handling to rehearse a scene with her and director Joel Souza went off, killing her and wounding the director. Speaking in an affidavit to police shortly after the incident, Souza noted that day, in particular, was unique because they had just brought on several new camera operators last minute following a mass walkout that took place earlier that morning.
