The breakfast TV ratings war is heating up with Nine's resurgent Today show snapping at the heels of Channel Seven's Sunrise for the first time in years.

And Today co-host Allison Langdon has revealed the 'tighter race' makes for far more compelling television as both programs lift their game.

'It's nice that it's a tighter race these days. It keeps it interesting and keeps everyone on their toes and at their best,' she told Woman's Day.

She said she'd told her pals: 'We were at a bar and I said this guy walked in, he had this red T-shirt and dark jeans... you know when you just had that moment where you have just like an overwhelming physical attraction to someone...

'The show - and trying to do the best one possible - is always on our minds,' she said.

Allison, who has been crucial to the Today show's comeback, is about to host a new prime-time show on the network called Parental Guidance.

It comes after Today soared ahead of Sunrise in the ratings last Wednesday with a five-city audience of 236,000.

It beat Sunrise, which had 228,000 metro viewers, and ABC News Breakfast, which had a combined audience of 205,000 across ABC and ABC News.

Meet the parents from Parental Guidance

Meet the parents from Parental Guidance Parental Guidance with journalist Allison Langdon and expert Dr Justin Coulson is a show that puts parents and their parenting style to the test. Here are the parents who are putting their convictions through the ringer. There's a reason why people warn that you should never tell a parent how to raise their children. It isn't just obnoxious, but it can also cause a lot of tension and unfair judgment. After all, is there any one way to navigate the murky and turbulent waters of parenting? Now, Channel Nine is throwing out the social rule book with its new show Parental Guidance that puts parenting styles to the test.

Today also secured a strong regional audience of 109,000, bringing its total national figure to 346,000, and helping Nine win the day in all key demos and total people.

These numbers will no doubt please Nine executives, who recently offered Allison and Karl one-year contract extensions worth $1.8million each.

Today's resurgence came after it underperformed last Tuesday, drawing just 193,000 viewers in the five-city metro market.

Sunrise, hosted by Natalie Barr and David 'Kochie' Koch, won easily with 244,000 metro viewers, followed by ABC News Breakfast, which drew an impressive 201,000.

But it seems this dip was just an anomaly because the figures show Today remains on an upward trend.

Parental Guidance airs Monday, Tuesday and Wednesday at 7:30pm on Nine
