Princess Charlene has been linked with the billionaire ex-boyfriend of model Naomi Campbell, who has reportedly been a comfort to the royal amid a raft of health issues.

Charlene, 43, was last week admitted to a treatment facility outside of Monaco after husband Prince Albert said she was suffering "profound general fatigue...exhaustion, both emotional and physical".

The mother-of-two spent six months in South Africa after contracting an ear, nose and throat infection which lead to a number of surgeries.

She was unable to return to Monaco due to complications on the advice of doctors.

Charlene was finally reunited with Prince Albert and their children Prince Jacques and Princess Gabriella in Monte Carlo on November 8.

But the celebrations were short-lived when Charlene was admitted to another health facility after a family-style intervention.

"She had already made her decision, and we only wanted her to confirm it in front of us," Prince Albert told People.

"She already knew the best thing to do was to go and have a rest and have a real medically framed treatment."

But now there are reports Charlene has been receiving support from Vladimir Doronin, who previously dated the supermodel, intensifying rumours of problems within the royal marriage.

When Charlene married Monaco's ruler in 2011, Doronin was a guest with Campbell.

Charlene's absence from Monaco saw her miss her 10-year wedding anniversary, but a series of videos were released by the Prince's Palace to mark the occasion.

Her long stint away sparked a number of rumours about the state of her marriage to Albert, with suggestions they were on the brink of a separation which the 63-year-old has consistently denied.

The rumours came to a head when Prince Albert was photographed attending several official events in Monte-Carlo with actress Sharon Stone, who was in Monaco to receive an award for her own environmental work.

Prince Albert later defended his wife's absence, saying in September Charlene "didn't go into exile".

And on Friday Albert issued his most forceful statement yet.

"I'm probably going to say this several times, but this has nothing to do with our relationship," Albert told People.

"I want to make that very clear. These are not problems within our relationship; not with the relationship between a husband and wife. It's of a different nature."

Instead, Charlene's admission to a clinic came after she was "overwhelmed and couldn't face official duties, life in general or even family life".

Her return to Monaco "went pretty well in the first few hours, and then it became pretty evident that she was unwell" he said.

On November 19 celebrations were held across Monaco for National Day, which Charlene had been due to attend.

Instead, Albert and his children appeared on the balcony of the Prince's Palace alone.

Jacques and Gabriella, who turn seven next month, held up signs reading: "We Miss You Mommy" and another "We Love You Mommy".
