Country music legend Troy Cassar-Daley has led the nominations for the 2022 Country Music Association of Australia (CMAA) Awards, which marks its 50th year in January.

Nominations for the Golden Guitars were today announced in Tamworth Town Hall, where they were first awarded in 1973.

The number of entries submitted were the most CMAA had recieved at 760 applications, topping last year's record figures.

Cassar-Daley is up for the most gongs with eight nominations.

He's no stranger to the Golden Guitars racking up 37 in total since 1996, and inducted into the Australian Roll of Renown in 2017.

His album 'The World Today' has now brought him in for awards including Album of the Year and Male Artist of the Year.

Deputy Mayor of Tamworth Phil Betts said the awards were a significant milestone to not only country music, but the regional city.

“What a time it is for country music– the big 5-0,” Mr Betts said.

“We’ve never been more excited to welcome our country music family back to Tamworth.

“It will be an extremely humbling moment.”

Vice-Chair of the CMAA Natalie Waller said live music was now a novelty for Australians coming off pandemic restrictions.

With state border and travel opening to New South Wales, organisers have predicted an influx of hundred-of-thousands of tourists and musicians to the city in January.

The music-tributed city has also spent the past several months spruiking itself up for visitors.

In October, the Big Golden Guitar in Tamworth underwent its first makeover since the early 1990s.

Tamworth Regional Council's Coordinator of Visitor Economy Kate Baker said the 12-metre tall icon was a vital piece of the music awards celebrations.

"We had a number of experts in the paint world come and have a look at it, and it did look tired," Ms Baker said.

"It's really important, so many people come and have photos out the front of it, so it is important that we make it look beautiful again."
