Like the photographs seen in other rooms when the Queen hosts audiences with visiting guests, they are frequently swapped for other images.

At the time of the photo controversy in 2019, royal author Ingrid Seward said the so-called snub was never intended to be seen as such.

"It does seem to represent the idea of a slimmed-down monarchy," she said.

"All the media problems with Harry and Meghan must have worried her. However, she would never be so underhand as to deliberately omit their picture."
