'OK, leave': Ali kicks out Bachelorette finalist before rose ceremony© Network Ten Taite's date went off without a hitch - but he still didn't tell Ali what she wanted to hear.

In all the years and all the seasons of The Bachelor and The Bachelorette in Australia, we can't think of one time a finalist - in this case, one of the final four contenders left - has left the show as dramatically as Charlie did on Wednesday night.

This episode is, of course, hometowns  - the one that arguably matters most, because it's when Bachelorette Ali Oetjen finally meets the families of her remaining suitors.

Family can say a lot about a person, you know? So hometowns = a Big Deal.

The show kicks-off with Todd's date and so Ali has flown to Perth to meet the 26-year-old in his natural habitat. Todd quickly proves he knows Ali quite well, by organising a hike through local bushland and onto the impressive Lesmurdie Falls. Their date goes off without a hitch.

The former “ Bachelor ” contestant handed out her final rose on Monday’s three-hour finale, complete with a proposal from Garrett Yrigoyen. That made Blake Horstmann the heartbroken runner-up. “I think that we could be right and we could be partners — but I think that there’s just a better fit for us out

After each rose ceremony , at least one one contestant does not receive a rose and goes home ;therefore, the pool of contenders gets smaller, which eventually leaves the bachelorette to decide between two contestants in the final rose ceremony .

'OK, leave': Ali kicks out Bachelorette finalist before rose ceremony© Network Ten Ali's face said it all during Charlie's confession they wouldn't be meeting his family. When Todd finally takes Ali home to meet his mum, dad and two protective sisters, Ali cops it a little bit from his oldest sister, but for the most part handles the "meeting the family" business with ease. Once dinner wraps up, Todd tells Ali his heart is hers if she wants it. Strong words, and they earn him a looong kiss - as well as odds-on chances of a place in the top two.

Next up, it's Taite's hometown date, in Ballarat, Victoria. They spend the day feeding ducks and being cute, but Ali still has some hesitation about Taite's commitment to her. "We have the most intense chemistry but once thing that still concerns me is that he's still too guarded with his feelings," she says. Sure enough, he doesn't do much to quell her fears during the date.

'OK, leave': Ali kicks out Bachelorette finalist before rose ceremony© Network Ten Amy was an unwelcome surprise on Ali's hometown date with Bill. When she meets his loved ones, it's his best friend Phil and sister Skye who serve the most difficult questions, like, "Do you think he's able to trust you, after this show and previous shows? That you're in it for the right reasons?" Ali holds herself well and ends up winning them all over - including Skye who was clearly the most mistrusting.

While Taite doesn't profess his feelings afterwards like Todd did, Ali's struggle to leave him once the date ends tells us it hasn't hurt his chances. Maybe she's decided he's worth the risk.

'OK, leave': Ali kicks out Bachelorette finalist before rose ceremony© Network Ten And finally... she's had enough. Bill's hometown date in Melbourne is next, and though Ali is still slightly sceptical of Bill's intentions, she's giving him another go. They spend time playing with his adorable dog in the park and then they head to his ex's place for dinner. That's right, HIS EX.

When Bill first tells Ali she'll be meeting his good friend Amy, all seems OK. She's a bit miffed that she's not meeting his parents, but they're both away on holiday - and Bill's brother and sister are apparently too caught up with work to be there. So, no family. Just Bill's two best mates, and Amy.

Turns out, Bill dated Amy - a fun little revelation that comes after dinner, when Amy and Ali are having a private conversation. To say Ali isn't overly happy about this information is to put it mildly, but she keeps up appearances until she can get the hell out of there.

Bill thinks the date has gone beautifully. Ali is more unsure than ever. Which just about sums up their relationship thus far.

'OK, leave': Ali kicks out Bachelorette finalist before rose ceremony© Network Ten Ali looked less than thrilled with Bill. Finally, we arrive at Charlie's hometown in Sydney. And hoo boy, do things go pear-shaped quickly. The pair of them go paddleboarding together and everything seems swell. They're kissing and all! Fun Charlie is back.

When they head back to the sand for a drink and a chat though, he casually drops a gentle little hometown bombshell: he won't be introducing Ali to his family. Whaaa? Doesn't he know how the hometown episode works?

The episode ends before revealing who the bachelorette will be. Shawn B. gets the first impression rose and kisses Kaitlyn as well. In the middle of the rose ceremony Kaitlyn is pulled aside by Brady, who tells her he is eliminating himself because he has feelings for Brit that he wants to pursue further.

Charlie explains that he can't give himself to Ali in full until he knows they're exclusive (read: so he doesn't get hurt). She, of course, tells him that can't happen yet - it goes against the very nature of the Bachelorette game. But that doesn't sit well with Charlie, and he won't let up.

What he's saying is reasonable, but it's the delivery that's all wrong and Ali doesn't like it one bit. They part ways awkwardly, both unsure of their footing.

'OK, leave': Ali kicks out Bachelorette finalist before rose ceremony© Network Ten Todd's family was quick to warm to Ali. When Ali arrives at the cocktail party later in the episode, she cuts her piece-to-camera short so she can go and find Charlie to ask him some burning questions.

It goes so badly. She asks Charlie to explain himself and he quickly unleashes a tirade about how hard it is for him to wait the process out. The conversation develops into a full-blown argument.

"I want this more than anything but to know that other people are involved kills me," he tells Ali. "You have the final say in this, Ali. I don't. I can't help but be confused."

"You can't help but [want] the control," Ali says.

"I need control of myself. I need to be me and I need to be real and I've been that since day dot and I'm being that right now," Charlie says. "I've laid this out to you and if it doesn't work for you just say so, Ali. It means you and me were never meant to be."

Vanessa Grimaldi trolled the hell out of ' Bachelor ' fans by posing with a bunch of wedding dresses but we've learned it was all business -- and NOT Nick Viall business. Naturally, many fans thought Vanessa had just spoiled the final rose ceremony that she was already prepping to be Mrs. Viall.

Who Got Kicked Off The Bachelorette ? In essence, The Bachelorette is all about success in true love. But in practice, the show features a lot more love losses than love wins. For every episode of the show, we'll update this list of who didn't receive a rose and/or took their leave of the show that night.

"OK, is that what you want me to say?"Ali asks.

"No, it's not what I want you to say. See, you - don't twist my words," Charlie says.

"I'm not twisting your words, I'm trying to comprehend what you're telling me!" Ali says.

"No, you're thinking worst-case scenario and thinking negative towards what I've said," he responds.

"Are you telling me what I'm feeling?" Ali asks with an incredulous laugh.

They go back and forth for a while longer before he drops this nail in the coffin:

"Not everything's a fairytale," he says.

"Oh, I know everything is not a fairytale," Ali responds icily.

She stands up and he eventually does the same.

"So is this goodbye then?" he asks.

"You're fine?" Ali asks back.

"I had my doubts and you've given me clarity now," Charlie says. "I know you don't get it, and that's a real shame ... I'm not going to beg for you, Ali. I'm not going to get on my hands and knees and go, 'please don't go, please don't go.'"

"OK. Leave," Ali says, finally snapping. "Take care. Be OK. Know that I'll be thinking of you. Bye."

And off Charlie goes. Not before he has one final message, though:

"I feel terrible for her, because I know who's left in here, and it's not going to end well," he says of Todd, Taite and Bill. "I've done more than enough to show Ali the way. If she can't see it then I'm sorry, that's her own fault ... I'm sad to see her making the same mistakes again."

Charlie, mate, your time is up.

Bachelorette's Rob Colangelo: "I'd had enough!".
