Melbourne western suburbs developer and builder Pelligra Group has snapped up Ford’s former manufacturing sites in a multimillion-dollar deal that ends an historic era of car manufacturing in Australia.

Ford will retain its research, design and engineering sites in both Geelong and Broadmeadows as well its You Yangs Proving Ground at Lara, Ford’s chief executive of Australia and New Zealand, Kay Hart, said.

Ford said it would subdivide portions of the sites where its existing operations use and retain a smaller footprint.

The price of the transaction hasn’t been disclosed, but the sites were worth an estimated $75 million when offered to the market.

Combined, Ford’s plants cover 85 hectares and have more than 265,000 square metres of factory floor and warehousing, equivalent to about 13 times the size of the Melbourne Cricket Grounds’s playing field.

The last Australian-made Ford, a blue XR6, rolled off the Broadmeadows assembly line in October three years ago and 600 workers lost their jobs as Ford closed its factory doors.

The global car giant first announced it would end local manufacturing in 2013, a move that saw it shed 1300 jobs and, along with the closure of rival manufacturers, prompted the cascading shut down of multiple other local car part manufacturers and suppliers.
