One of Australia's most remote cattle properties, Suplejack Station, has sold for $21 million at an auction in Alice Springs.

The property, offered for sale for the first time in its 55-year history, was purchased by Robert Savage and his family, who eclipsed the only other bidder, his sister, Lettie Cook and her family.

Suplejack was put on the market in May after issues arose with succession planning in relation to the estate of Bob and Lillian Savage, the parents of Mr Savage and Ms Cook.

The isolated 381,000-hectare station, located about 700 kilometres north-west of Alice Springs in the Tanami Desert, was sold with around 19,000 cattle, plant and equipment.

Around 130,000 hectares of the property is fenced, including 14 paddocks, 17 bores and three yards, with about 65 per cent of the station remaining undeveloped.

Built up from nothing

Agent for the sale Geoff Warriner previously told ABC Rural there was "a lot of history" for both the Cook and Savage families at Suplejack.

Bob and Lillian Savage took up a grazing licence in 1964, building it into a cattle property from a bare block with no fences, bores, buildings or cattle, eventually converting the licence to a pastoral lease in 1978.

In 2011, Bob Savage told ABC Rural he discovered the country he saw as suitable for cattle by chance in the 1960s.

"I was working in the country and I happened to go down that way with a couple of blokes who broke down their motorcar," he said.

"I saw the country and I couldn't believe there was any good country in that area, but I've proven since that there was and there is."

ABC Rural understands the Cook family was disappointed to miss out on purchasing the property, which they had lived and worked at for decades.
