Greece announces curfews for Athens, Thessaloniki and other places
The Greek government has announced curfews for the cities of Athens, Thessaloniki and other Corona hotspots in view of the increasing number of infections. "We want to limit traffic and nightly meetings that encourage the spread of the virus," said Greek Prime Minister Kyriakos Mitsotakis on Thursday evening in a televised address. As of Saturday, residents in the affected cities will no longer be allowed to leave their homes between 00:30 and 05:00 (local time).
In regions where a critical number of Covid 19 infections was reached over seven consecutive days, people's mobility has decreased noticeably. According to a special evaluation of experimental data by the Federal Statistical Office, mobility between October 19 and 25 in the affected districts and urban districts fell by twelve percent compared to the 38th calendar week (September 14 to 20). Even if factors such as the weather and tourist activity played a role in mobility - movement in regions less affected by new infections only decreased by six percent in the comparison period.
The decline in daily mobility was particularly pronounced in the Berchtesgadener Land district. With the entry into force of the exit restrictions on October 20, 2020, the measured movements there decreased again significantly, it was said: On October 19, mobility was 25 percent and on October 20, 42 percent below the level of the corresponding weekday of the 38th calendar week. Last Saturday even 65 percent fewer movements were measured in Berchtesgadener Land than on the Saturday of the comparison week.
For the investigation, anonymized cell phone data were evaluated.
