Weekly supermarket bills will soon get a whole lot cheaper with German powerhouse Kaufland set to spark an all-out price war.

The low-cost super chain has started a high-level recruitment drive in Australia as it prepares to shake up the local retail landscape – taking on Coles, Woolworths and Aldi along with discount retailers, such as Kmart, JB Hi Fi and Harvey Norman.

Wherever the German hypermarket has launched, a price war has followed.

Neil Rechlin, from Next Gen, said Kaufland is not like any other player.

“Kaufland, clearly, are going to be pushing prices down very hard,” he told 9NEWS.

“The food range that they’re going to offer is clearly going to compete with Woolworths and Coles but at Aldi prices.”

A study from Holland shows that when Aldi was taken on by a second discount chain, grocery prices fell by 8.2 percent across the board.

Analysts expect the falls to be even greater here – beyond 10 percent.

“Aldi has owned the low-cost food and grocery market, certainly for the last 15 years. But I think all of that is about to change,” Dr Gary Mortimer, from the QUT Business School, said.

Mr Hewlett previously worked at Woolworths in Australia and for Aldi and Lidl and is seen as a rising star.

Mr Rechlin argues Kaufland’s entry, most likely this side of Christmas, will “absolutely shake up retail”.

“Consumers for sure will be the winners and mainstream grocery prices will continue to drop,” he said.

And that will have a devastating impact on the likes of IGA and could result in big job losses.

Margins here have been typically healthy, which is why Kaufland has its eye on Australia.

While an Aldi store typically stocks 1500 items, a large Coles and Woolworths can stock up to 25,000.

Kaufland is more like a bigger version of Costco, typically stocking 60,000 different products from supermarket groceries to televisions and other electronics and clothing – kind of like a Coles, Kmart and JB Hi-Fi all in one.

“Their televisions are going to be competing with the Kogans, potentially, the JB Hi-Fis, the Harvey Normans. So, all those mainstream retailers are going to be under pressure,” Mr Rechlin says.

And Kaufland has another way to hit Aldi, in particular, where it hurts – taking on Aldi’s weekly special buys.

They might be hugely popular, but Aldi has been heavily criticised for not stocking enough to meet demand.

“So, shoppers lining up for hours only to miss out on those weekly specials,” Dr Mortimer said.

“When Kaufland arrive, those weekly specials will be available all through the week – and it won’t be limited volumes.”

He says while Coles and Woolworths have positioned themselves well in terms of range and value, IGA and Foodworks will be in trouble with Kaufland having a “devastating impact on some small independent grocers”.

He thinks there’ll be not much space left for IGA.

“We’ve only seen the tip of the iceberg when it comes to grocery price wars,” he says.

Coles revealed this week it was spending $200 million every six months on slashing shelf prices, while Woolworths spends even more.

And that’s without Kaufland in the market yet.
