While there's a price freeze on electricity in New South Wales and the ACT, gas prices will be cut by 3% for residents and 4% for small businesses in New South Wales.

Speaking on World Environment Day Energy Minister Josh Frydenberg declared the cuts a "step in the right direction."

"I welcome today's announcement by Origin that they are reducing power prices in South Australia and Queensland, for small businesses this could mean a 4% reduction in power bills, about $100 a year," he said.

"We are through the worst of it we have turned the corner when it comes to energy prices," he added.

In announcing the cuts, Origin Energy's General Manager Retail, Jon Briskin also backed the Government's National Energy Guarantee

It requires providers meet two targets, a reliability guarantee and an emissions guarantee.

"We believe we can drive electricity prices even lower for Australian households and businesses, if we can agree on a long term energy policy to encourage timely investment in new supply to replace the nation's aging power stations.

"We encourage the industry and governments at all levels to stay the course and continue to progress the National Energy Guarantee," Mr Briskin said.

The government claims the NEG could save households $300 a year, and more for small businesses.

But it faces a battle with the states.

"I'm confident we can get the support of the states, and of course the support of my colleagues to legislate this important reform," Minister Frydenberg said.

When asked on Sky News if he hoped other companies followed suit on price cuts, Minister Frydenberg said, "absolutely."
