The Pirate Ship ride is around 35 years old, according to CBS Pittsburgh. It was eventually stopped by a secondary braking system.

A child who was on the ride told CBS Pittsburgh: "It just kept on going, and I just got really scared, and I was feeling really sick, and I was crying. I was just terrified."

A parent who was on the ride said: "I was terrified. My kids are crying. There were people behind us panicking. There was a guy in front of us, he was ready to get sick."

A Kennywood spokesman said the ride had a good safety record and characterised the incident as "relatively minor," according to CBS.

After the malfunction, the ride was closed for maintenance.
