The 25-year-old suffered the injury during pre-season training this morning at Hawthorn's headquarters at Waverley Park.

An ambulance was driven onto the field and paramedics immobilised Mitchell's leg before taking him to hospital, accompanied by one of the club doctors.

Hawthorn confirmed the serious nature of the injury in a statement on Friday.

Mitchell ruptured the AC joint in his shoulder in Hawthorn's semi-final loss to Melbourne last September, and required surgery.

Friday's training session was the Hawks' first for 2019.

Now the team, which finished fourth on last year's ladder after the home and away rounds, will have to do without its best midfielder when the new season starts against the Crows at Adelaide Oval on March 23.
