Geelong Cats legend Gary Ablett's flawless Match Review record is intact after his one-match ban was reduced to a $2,000 fine at the AFL Tribunal on Tuesday night.

Ablett was facing the first suspension of his 328-career for striking Essendon's Dylan Shiel with his forearm.

He successfully had the charge downgraded from intentional to careless conduct before the panel decided that a fine was sufficient punishment for the two-time Brownlow Medallist.

Ablett's team argued to no avail that the financial penalty should have been waived given the 34-year-old's clean sheet.

Ablett spent 29 minutes in the witness stand during the almost hour-and-a-half-long hearing.

"I'm obviously very happy with the outcome," he said afterwards.

"I've never intentionally struck anyone in my career, so I'm happy with the result.

"Obviously we were focused on what happened on the weekend. I didn't intentionally go to strike, so I'm glad it's all played out the way it did.

“It was basically trying to just minimise the impact. We were both running at pretty quick speed, I had to make a decision in that split-second.

“I tried to jump out of the way and unfortunately got him in the back of the neck and I believed a free kick should’ve been given, but not a report.”

The ladder-leading Cats take on the 15th-placed North Melbourne at Marvel Stadium on Sunday afternoon.
