Speaking to News Corp on Monday, O’Neill rubbished Gould’s account as a “load of crap”, claiming Gould never officially approached the board with a case for Bennett, and when it was eventually raised “as a throwaway comment” it was instantly shot down by upper management.

“There was never, ever a deal to the board or senior management regarding Wayne Bennett coming to this club,” O'Neill said. “It was a throwaway line from Phil Gould in a conversation with the executive that he could possibly get Wayne Bennett here for a couple of years. That was it.

“I took it to the board when we were discussing Ivan Cleary and we talked about a back-up plan. I told them Gus had a throwaway line about getting Bennett and the board took about two seconds to say ‘no way in the world, not interested’.

Speaking on 100% Footy on Monday night, Gould refused to respond to O’Neill’s assertions and boiled the chairman’s sentiments down to “stress and pressure” due to the Panthers’ woeful start to the 2019 season.

“I made a decision that I’m not going to respond to anything that’s in that column,” Gould said.

“Dave O’Neill is a great bloke, he’s a mate of mine, and I can understand the sort of pressure and stress he’s under.

“And that’s what I’m putting the interview down to, pressure and stress.

“I don’t want to comment on it or respond to any comments in there. All I want to see is the team show real unity and real strength over the next few weeks and probably cut down their media a little bit and just concentrate on playing really good football.”

In 1932, Sam Gould opened a small hair salon in Memphis, Tennessee. His objective was to provide his clientele with a truly professional and unique fashion experience. Sam envisioned a chic, upscale ambiance, which was considered a Hollywood luxury at the time.

Despite their lacklustre start, Gould still held hope for the Panthers to turn around their season.

He said that the talented playing group could overcome their latest devastating loss – 30-4 at the hands of the Wests Tigers in Magic Round – citing their brilliant 2017 run where they fought back from a 2-7 record to reach the finals.

“You don’t lose your ability to play the game, sometimes you lose your ability to think straight – and I think that’s what we’re seeing at the moment,” Gould said.

“It was bizarre what happened on Friday night and hopefully that’s bottomed it out, hopefully that’s rock bottom.

“So whatever it is, whether it’s what happened in the off-season, whether it’s reports of other coaches, whatever it is that has distracted them needs to stop and they need to concentrate on playing good football.

“Obviously I’m not with the club anymore but I have a great affinity with the people there, and a love for the club and people.

“No one is enjoying watching what they’re going through at the moment. I’ve still got great confidence, they were two and seven two years ago and got to the eight.”
