Williams was born into a working-class family on Aug. 3, 1985, in Auckland, New Zealand, to John and mother Lee Williams. Although his father was an accomplished rugby league player himself, Williams was introduced to the sport by his mother.
Although Williams was small in stature and not very well-built during his school years, he was quite athletic — taking up competitive sprinting, high jump and cross-country running.
Williams was a junior at Marist Saints - a rugby league club based in Mount Albert, New Zealand - when he was spotted by former talent scout John Ackland. In 2002, he became the youngest player ever to sign for a National Rugby League (NRL) club, Sydney's Canterbury Bulldogs.
While training with his new club, Williams worked full-time to support his family. "Being a young Kiwi lad, a young Polynesian boy, I was pretty close to my family, but when I moved to Sydney, I went from training twice a week, playing touch footy with my mates, to working full-time as a laborer and training professionally,” he recalled in an 2013 interview with the BBC.

He later became the youngest player to appear for them in a Grand Final, when he came off the bench in the Bulldogs' victory over the Sydney Roosters in the 2004 NRL Grand Final.
That same year, he was selected by the New Zealand rugby league national team and made his debut for the Kiwis as their youngest-ever Test player in the 2004 ANZAC Test against Australia. Williams’ remarkable year was capped off at the 2004 RLIF Awards, where he won the International Newcomer of the Year Award and was named in Rugby League World magazine's 2004 World XIII.
Williams struggled with injuries during the 2005 season and had to dismiss suggestions of being injury prone. He was also forced to miss the Tri-Nations year due to an injury.

Williams converted to Islam in 2008, stating he found his faith in France during his stint with Toulon. Prior to his change of faith, he was involved in several off-field infractions, but believes he has transformed himself completely since.

As his contract with the French club ran out in 2010, he was offered a reported three-year deal worth $6 million - reportedly the largest in rugby union history. He rejected it in favor of a contract with New Zealand Rugby Union in a bid to represent the All Blacks. Williams gifted his World Cup winner’s medal to, then 14-year-old, fan Charlie Line, who had run on to the pitch to meet his hero but was tackled by a security guard. The Kiwi star earned plaudits for his act and was later awarded a substitute medal.
In January 2016, Williams began training with the All Blacks Sevens team in preparation for the Rio Olympic Games and played in a series of rugby sevens tournaments in the lead-up. However, his Olympic journey was cut short after he ruptured his Achilles tendon in the opening game against Japan. He was expected to be out of action for up to nine months.
