Collingwood veteran Travis Varcoe has revealed the heartfelt meaning behind the Magpies' Indigenous Round jersey it will wear against Sydney in Round 10.

Designed by Varcoe's partner's sister Lee-Anne Miller, the design tells the story of how friends, Collingwood and the broader football community supported the Varcoe family after the tragic passing of his sister Maggie last September.

Maggie Varcoe passed away days after being injured in an on-field collision, and her brother wore her name on his arm throughout Collingwood's inspirational finals campaign.

“The way the club supported me and my family last year, through that time when my sister passed, is what inspired it,” Varcoe told Collingwood's website.

Sydney v Collingwood: Young Pies defender faces potential Buddy nightmare

Sydney v Collingwood: Young Pies defender faces potential Buddy nightmare Collingwood defender Jack Madgen probably has mixed memories of his senior debut. The 26-year-old was thrown in the deep end when he was forced to line up on Sydney superstar Lance Franklin in their round 20 clash at the SCG last season. Buddy already had his tail up on the night, having booted three goals before his opponent, Darcy Moore, was ruled out of the second half with injury. Madgen got the job on Franklin who outclassed the debutant, helping himself to three more goals as the Swans escaped with a two-point, come-from-behind win.

“I think it’s beautiful. For the way it looks and for the meaning behind it.

“There are four layers to it. The inner circle represents the players I’m surrounded by every day. The next circle of dots is all of the people outside of the playing group who support us and enable us to perform at our best, especially in tough times.

“The circle outside of that is for the friends and family we rely on so heavily for their love and support and then there is the fans and the Collingwood community who glue it all together.

“It brings together all of the elements of being a Collingwood person and acknowledges them for their support in good times and bad.”

Blue has significant religious meanings around the world. Ancient Egypt associated blue with divinity and the sky. Amun, the chief deity of the Egyptian Empire (also known as King of Gods), would turn his skin blue in order to fly (invisibly) across the sky.

In a cruel twist of fate, Varcoe will have to watch his teammates run out against the Swans on TV after being handed a one-match ban last week.

Speaking to Macquarie Sports Radio, Varcoe revealed his anguish at missing the Sir Doug Nicholls Indigenous Round.

“The club said there was no way around it and it was taken out of my hands,” Varcoe said when asked if he considered challenging the ban.

“Unfortunately for me, it definitely went the wrong way and I was very disappointed I didn’t get an opportunity to challenge it because I thought I did all the right things.

“I played the ball, it was the right technique and ended up getting punished for it.

“What can I sort of say and I do about it because there’s no way to change or overturn (the decision).

“For younger kids watching the game, you’d like them to focus on good technique and protecting yourself – that’s how I was taught from a very young age.

“I feel like I got punished for playing the game.”

Varcoe will get to wear the jersey when he comes back in Round 11 with the Magpies scheduled to don the jersey against Fremantle at the MCG.
