'Pongia became both a great player and a great man,' Endacott said.

The late player's wife spoke of how his two-year-old daughter Maia was a point of pride in their lives as they struggled to have a child.

'(Quentin) got to be a dad, which was one of his dreams,' she said.

Sir Peter Leitch, a close friend of Ponga, was organising a fundraiser for his medical treatment on June 7th before he died.

Sir Peter said he will still hold the fundraiser but dedicate it towards funds to help raise Pongia's two-year-old daughter Maia.
