The winner around the twisty streets of the French principality last season, Ricciardo had a fantastic start, jumping into fifth after passing Kevin Magnussen into turn one.

However, that was as good as it got for the Australian.

On lap 11, local Ferrari driver Charles Leclerc crashed in attempting to fight his way back through the field, bringing out the safety car.

Leclerc had started 15th after a mistake from his team in Saturday's qualifying session ensured he missed out on challenging for pole.

That crash sent the top four drivers on track scrambling into the pits, and Renault ordered that Ricciardo followed suit.

It was a decision that would prove to be costly as Carlos Sainz, Daniil Kvyat, Alex Albon and Romain Grosjean all stayed out and gained valuable track position to leave the Australian floundering in tenth spot, climbing to ninth only after Grosjean was handed a penalty after the race.

"As soon as [the team] said 'box' I had no time to react or react differently, but obviously it wasn't the right call," Ricciardo told British broadcaster Sky Sports after the race.

"We came in and just handed everyone else a position.

"We had a great start, had a good turn one and got into fifth and that was really our place, so it's a shame.

"We could have had a big result today."

Hamilton wins it for Niki

Championship leader Hamilton won the race from pole, bravely holding off a fast-finishing Max Verstappen on rapidly wearing tyres to claim his third victory at the storied street circuit.

Hamilton dedicated his fourth win of the season to his friend and mentor, former world champion Niki Lauda, who died earlier in the week.

During the race, Hamilton wore a helmet of the same design that Niki Lauda wore during his career and both Mercedes cars sported red halos with the phrase "thank you Niki" on it to honour the former champion.

Five-time world champion Hamilton described the race as his "hardest ever" after he completed 67 laps on the medium compound tyre after pitting when the unfortunate Leclerc crashed on lap 11.

Hamilton, along with the rest of the leaders, all pitted during the subsequent safety car period, but only Hamilton chose the softer compound.

He was clearly feeling the pressure as Verstappen closed in the final stages, telling his team to "hope for a miracle" in one of a series of increasingly desperate radio conversations with his pit wall.

But Hamilton prevailed, despite the pair coming into contact on the penultimate lap as Verstappen made a daring lunge down the inside into the Nouvelle Chicane.

"I really was fighting with the spirit of Niki," Hamilton said.

"Niki's been such an influential person in our team, helping to get us where we are.

"So I know he'll be looking down and know he'd take his hat off today.

"I was trying to stay focused and trying to make him proud."

Track position is key

Hamilton's dogged defence of his lead would have brought back fond memories for Ricciardo, who won in similar circumstances around this track last year when he suffered engine trouble when leading the race.

However, the team error that lead to his fall down the rankings would likely stir more uncomfortable memories, with a poor decision from former team Red Bull bungling a pitstop in the 2016 edition of the historic race.

Both of the most recent victories at the claustrophobic street circuit prove that track position is everything in Monaco.

"After the good qualifying yesterday, we thought a big part of the job had been done," said Renault boss Cyril Abiteboul, further emphasising the point.

"Unfortunately, the single most important decision of the day was to stop Daniel under the safety car.

"It turned out to be the wrong one."

However, despite the frustrations, Ricciardo once again highlighted the positives when he spoke to the F1 website.

"It was a very frustrating race, to be honest," Ricciardo said.

"We definitely could have done better and got a great result as we had all the cards in our hand.

"Although we missed some points, the car was very good even though we couldn't always use the speed we had.

"We'll look at what happened and address it for future races."

Ricciardo's highest finish for Renault since his move from Red Bull remains the seventh he recorded in China.

The 29-year-old sits in 13th spot in the championship standings with eight points, 129 behind Hamilton.
