(Photo by Charles Coates/Getty Images) Daniel Ricciardo was left frustrated after a mistake from his Renault team cost him a higher finishing position at the Monaco Grand Prix, which was won by Mercedes' Lewis Hamilton.

Ricciardo finished in tenth spot on the track, although was later promoted to ninth.

However, it could have been so much better for Ricciardo had his Renault team not misjudged a pitstop during an early safety car period.

Why Ricciardo has no regrets over switch

Why Ricciardo has no regrets over switch On the anniversary of his last grand prix win, Daniel Ricciardo has revealed why he doesn't have any misgivings over his move to Renault.

Daniel Joseph Ricciardo (/rɪˈkɑːrdoʊ/ "Ricardo"; born 1 July 1989) is an Australian racing driver who is currently competing in Formula One for the Renault F 1 Team.

The winner around the twisty streets of the French principality last season, Ricciardo had a fantastic start, jumping into fifth after passing Kevin Magnussen into turn one.

However, that was as good as it got for the Australian.

On lap 11, local Ferrari driver Charles Leclerc crashed in attempting to fight his way back through the field, bringing out the safety car.

Leclerc had started 15th after a mistake from his team in Saturday's qualifying session ensured he missed out on challenging for pole.

That crash sent the top four drivers on track scrambling into the pits, and Renault ordered that Ricciardo followed suit.

It was a decision that would prove to be costly as Carlos Sainz, Daniil Kvyat, Alex Albon and Romain Grosjean all stayed out and gained valuable track position to leave the Australian floundering in tenth spot, climbing to ninth only after Grosjean was handed a penalty after the race.

"As soon as [the team] said 'box' I had no time to react or react differently, but obviously it wasn't the right call," Ricciardo told British broadcaster Sky Sports after the race.

"We came in and just handed everyone else a position.

"We had a great start, had a good turn one and got into fifth and that was really our place, so it's a shame.

"We could have had a big result today."

Hamilton wins it for Niki

Championship leader Hamilton won the race from pole, bravely holding off a fast-finishing Max Verstappen on rapidly wearing tyres to claim his third victory at the storied street circuit.

Hamilton dedicated his fourth win of the season to his friend and mentor, former world champion Niki Lauda, who died earlier in the week.

During the race, Hamilton wore a helmet of the same design that Niki Lauda wore during his career and both Mercedes cars sported red halos with the phrase "thank you Niki" on it to honour the former champion.

Renault reveal reason for Ricciardo struggles

Renault reveal reason for Ricciardo struggles Renaul's boss Cyril Abiteboul has revealed the reason for Daniel Ricciardo’s struggles since joining the team.

Daniel Ricciardo managed to hold on to his lead from pole to win the Monaco Grand Prix , with An emotional Christian Horner roars at Ricciardo : “That’s unbelievable, that is payback for what Perez had a problem in the pits, which has cost him 2.5secs. He’s back in seventh, as Ricciardo preserves

Five-time world champion Hamilton described the race as his "hardest ever" after he completed 67 laps on the medium compound tyre after pitting when the unfortunate Leclerc crashed on lap 11.

Hamilton, along with the rest of the leaders, all pitted during the subsequent safety car period, but only Hamilton chose the softer compound.

He was clearly feeling the pressure as Verstappen closed in the final stages, telling his team to "hope for a miracle" in one of a series of increasingly desperate radio conversations with his pit wall.

But Hamilton prevailed, despite the pair coming into contact on the penultimate lap as Verstappen made a daring lunge down the inside into the Nouvelle Chicane.

"I really was fighting with the spirit of Niki," Hamilton said.

"Niki's been such an influential person in our team, helping to get us where we are.

"So I know he'll be looking down and know he'd take his hat off today.

"I was trying to stay focused and trying to make him proud."

Track position is key

Hamilton's dogged defence of his lead would have brought back fond memories for Ricciardo, who won in similar circumstances around this track last year when he suffered engine trouble when leading the race.

Leclerc tops 3rd practice in Monaco, teammate Vettel crashes

Leclerc tops 3rd practice in Monaco, teammate Vettel crashes Ferrari had mixed fortunes in third and final practice for the Monaco Grand Prix on Saturday, with Sebastian Vettel crashing and his teammate Charles Leclerc topping the charts ahead of both Mercedes cars.Leclerc, who is from Monaco, will look to clinch his second pole position of the season in qualifying later Saturday. In third practice, he was 0.053 seconds ahead of Valtteri Bottas and 0.213 clear of Formula One championship leader Lewis Hamilton. Red Bull's Max Verstappen was fourth fastest. Leclerc has impressed at times in his first season with Ferrari, but Vettel is struggling with his composure once again.

Lewis Hamilton wins a close battle with Red Bull's Daniel Ricciardo in a thrilling Monaco GP to re-ignite his title campaign. However, the team error that lead to his fall down the rankings would likely stir more uncomfortable memories, with a poor decision from former team Red Bull bungling a pitstop in the 2016 edition of the historic race.

Both of the most recent victories at the claustrophobic street circuit prove that track position is everything in Monaco.

"After the good qualifying yesterday, we thought a big part of the job had been done," said Renault boss Cyril Abiteboul, further emphasising the point.

"Unfortunately, the single most important decision of the day was to stop Daniel under the safety car.

"It turned out to be the wrong one."

However, despite the frustrations, Ricciardo once again highlighted the positives when he spoke to the F1 website.

"It was a very frustrating race, to be honest," Ricciardo said.

"We definitely could have done better and got a great result as we had all the cards in our hand.

"Although we missed some points, the car was very good even though we couldn't always use the speed we had.

"We'll look at what happened and address it for future races."

Ricciardo's highest finish for Renault since his move from Red Bull remains the seventh he recorded in China.

The 29-year-old sits in 13th spot in the championship standings with eight points, 129 behind Hamilton.

Renault now have 'real' qualifying ability: Ricciardo.
Aussie Daniel Ricciardo believes Renault has made an improvement which will finally make them a force to reckoned with. Renault have had trouble with their power unit in recent seasons, but an upgrade made in Spain may be a major game-changer for the Formula One team. "Both Nico and I complimented the Renault boys and our qualifying mode felt pretty strong," Ricciardo told the F1 website. "My reference from last year, I am pulling an extra gear before some apexes. So definitely a year on it is a lot better. We actually have a real qualifying mode this year.
