Nathan Cleary admits he thought he'd lost his spot in Brad Fittler's New South Wales State of Origin side as his Penrith Panthers outfit endured their worst start to a season in over a decade.

Despite a huge amount of criticism over the past two months as Penrith have scraped together just three wins from 11 matches, Cleary retained his spot in the New South Wales squad to contest the first Origin match at Suncorp Stadium on June 5.

Cleary will line-up alongside Rabbitohs debutant Cody Walker, as injury ruled out a host of other in-form players.

Speaking at the Blues' first media event on Monday morning, Cleary revealed that he thought he would lose his spot in the side.

"I try to block it out, but it always finds a way to get into your head anyway," he said.

"That's something I've been trying to deal with this year - stopping the self doubt coming in and getting out of the negative mindset.
