The former tennis champion Margaret Court has claimed “ tennis is full of lesbians” following a row “Everybody knows that it is wrong but they’re after our young ones, that’s what they are after”. Australian players including grand slam champion Samantha Stosur have deferred any decision

While Barty ’s varied all-court game, including the best sliced backhand in women’s tennis , has been instrumental in her march up the rankings, Stosur believes Barty ’s biggest weapon “But it’s knowing when to use what at the right time. That’s what Ash is very good at. She has a very good tactical mind.

The duo, along with wildcard Priscilla Hon, will play second round matches in Paris on Thursday after straight-sets wins to open their campaigns on Monday.

The nation’s No 1 has enjoyed a remarkable year but opinion is split on how deep the talent below her runs.

Australian Ashleigh Barty defeats Czech teenager Marketa Vondrousova in the French Open final to win her first Grand Slam singles title and complete a fairytale return to the sport.

One-time world No.4 Stosur knows the fortnight well, having gone to the third round or beyond in every one of the last 10 years.

The 35-year-old boasts a US Open title as well as three semi-finals and a final at Roland Garros in what has been a remarkable run on clay.

Barty's quarter-final appearance at this year's Australian Open is the eighth seed's only deep grand slam run.

But Stosur isn't rushing to mentor a 23-year-old she says has a tremendous grip on her game.

"If she ever asked I'd be willing to help of course, but when you've got your team around you too many voices aren't necessarily ideal," Stosur, now ranked 96 in the world, said.

"If she needs advice I'm there but she's quality; she knows tennis better than anyone tactically and technically.

"Over the past years she's never looked at the clay as favourable, but I hope that starts to change."

Barty and Stosur teamed up to win the decisive doubles in a Fed Cup semi-final in Brisbane earlier this year, a victory Stosur counted among her career highlights.

The pair progressed relatively easily compared to some of the tournament's big names, with Serena Williams, Naomi Osaka and Simon Halep all dropping sets in their first round matches.

Stosur will play world No.58 Ekatarina Alexandrova, while Barty meets Australian Open semi-finalist Danielle Collins.

Stosur admitted to not knowing much about her Russian rival but has been around long enough to know what to expect.

"It doesn't matter whether you're No.1 or 67 - if you're winning matches you're not easy to beat in tournaments like this," she said.

"At the end of the day, everyone's good so it doesn't really matter if you're playing the last person in the draw."
