Ruiz became the first ever Mexican heavyweight champion of the world after defeating overwhelming favourite and reigning title-holder Joshua with a stunning seventh-round TKO stoppage in the Brit's US debut at Madison Square Garden.

The 30-1 underdog was shorter and noticeably less physically cut than Joshua, but never was the phrase 'don't judge a book by it's cover' more true than in New York City on fight night.

In the post-bout press conference, a gobsmacked Ruiz had a heartfelt message for his mother who was in tears watching on.

"Mum, I love you and our lives are gonna change," the 29-year-old said.

"We don’t have to struggle no more, thanks to god. Everything happened for a reason, baby."

Reporters quizzed Ruiz's mother before his press conference about the win, where she revealed she wasn't a fan of his decision to become a professional boxer.

"I didn't want it but he said, 'No Ma, this is my career and I'm going to do that'," she told media.

When asked whether he got his strength from her or his father Andy Sr, she clenched her fist and said: "I think from me!"

"I know that he's chubby and they think that he didn't have punch, but he is strong. I knew he would do this.

The crown was too much, even for a physical god like Anthony Joshua

The crown was too much, even for a physical god like Anthony Joshua Anthony Joshua always looked the part as the heavyweight champion of the world. But Andy Ruiz took him to a place where no amount of training could save his belts.

"He has the punch. He said, 'I'm going to do it, mum'. He was going to show everyone that he was going to win.

"I love him."

Ruiz began visiting a boxing gym at the age of six and had his first amateur fight at eight years old, but by his teens he was in a gang in California called 'Impe 13'. He told media in the pre-fight press conference that boxing saved his life.

"I was a little gangster when I was young. I had my head bald, hanging around with the wrong cliques," Ruiz said.

"I don’t want to say what things I would do, but it was good and bad experience.

"But there was something about boxing that made me want to go back and back. Boxing kept me away from getting in major trouble.

"I have a lot of friends that have died, that are still in jail right now, or they’re doing drugs and I see them at the corner and 7-Eleven."

Ruiz is reportedly set for a $US7 million payday after the win, but with Joshua keen to exercise his rematch clause, the new world heavyweight champion should expect an even bigger cheque in their next bout.

It marks an incredible rise of a boxer that only took the title bout on late notice last month after Joshua's initial opponent Jarrell Miller failed multiple drug tests in the lead-up.

Ruiz was just picking up momentum on a comeback trail after suffering his only professional defeat to Kiwi heavyweight Joseph Parker in 2016 by majority decision in Auckland.

He beat Devin Vargas (KO), Kevin Johnson (UD) and Alexander Dimitrenko (RTD) en route to facing Joshua, which was less than two months after his last fight against Dimitrenko.

Before the bout in New York, Joshua was already looking towards his next potential opponent, Deontay Wilder or Tyson Fury, such was the confidence the former champion in three of the four world title belts had.

But Ruiz, who was mockingly nicknamed the 'Mexican Butterbean', never lost focus of his history-making potential, consistently backing himself to cause an upset.

"I’m still pinching myself to see if this is real, man," Ruiz said in the press conference.

"I wanted to prove everybody wrong, all the doubters, thinking that I was gonna lose in the third round, first round. I was looking at comments as well.

"But what do you know, I’m the first Mexican heavyweight champion of the world."
