Surgery rules Lions' Berry out 6-8 weeks

Surgery rules Lions' Berry out 6-8 weeks Brisbane Lions youngster Jarrod Berry will be out of AFL action for 6-8 weeks after having a cyst removed from his knee. Promising Brisbane midfielder Jarrod Berry is expected to be out of AFL action for six to eight weeks after undergoing surgery to remove a Baker's cyst from his knee. A Baker's cyst is a fluid-filled pocket that causes a blister-like bulge and can cause pain behind the knee. Lions football manager David Noble said 21-year-old Berry's knee was sore after the team's Round 9 win against Adelaide.

In reality, Damien Hardwick perhaps couldn't have imagined a worse possible encounter for his first match without injured five-time All With youngster Ryan Garthwaite also hobbled due to an Achilles injury, the assumption had been that last week's debutant Noah Balta would be pushed into a role in

Richmond coach Damien Hardwick will readily send young defender Ryan Garthwaite to dangerous Geelong forward Tom Hawkins in Friday night's AFL blockbuster.

While Garthwaite is only 20 and has played just seven senior games, Hardwick is impressed with his competitive streak and a readiness to learn.

David Astbury's injury means the Tigers will need Garthwaite to spend time on Hawkins, who has kicked four goals in each of his last four games.

"He's one of those players who loves to learn and that's why we love him as a player," Hardwick said.

Hardwick said his players had the maturity to perform this September while enjoying the hype building around them after a crowd of 95,028 – the biggest The coach predicted a quick bounce back into finals last August, but even he couldn't see the club making a preliminary final in such thrilling fashion.

But Hardwick backed Ryan Garthwaite to go head-to head with the Geelong star. Garthwaite spent time on Hawkins in round 13 last year, when the Cats spearhead was kept to "Young Garthwaite did a really good job on him, so we are confident that he'll be able to do the job again,'' Hardwick said.

"It's what we continue to challenge him with - you're playing against the league's best and it's only going to make you a better player.

"He's a very competitive kid, so he hates getting any goals kicked on him.

"But the reality is, at 20 as a key defender, that's going to happen ... he's certainly rising to the challenge."

Coming off their upset loss to North Melbourne, the Tigers made four changes for the MCG clash.

They dropped Shai Bolton and Nathan Broad, while Brandon Ellis is also injured.

Father-son pick Patrick Naish will make his AFL debut as Daniel Rioli, Jack Graham and Jacob Townsend return.

Gary Ablett and Rhys Stanley are back for the ladder-leading Cats, who dropped Zac Smith and James Parsons.

Rioli is back after a week in the VFL, where the livewire forward showed he had received the message from Richmond loud and clear about their expectations on him.

'Lives in ruins': Lloyd's warning to AFL stars

'Lives in ruins': Lloyd's warning to AFL stars Matthew Lloyd has expressed deep concerns about a growing problem plaguing AFL stars nationwide. Lloyd believes the signs of a gambling culture within the game arose a decade ago, coinciding with the increase in online betting sites, advertising and widespread smartphone availability. “I noticed as I was retiring, the amount of players who were becoming addicted to gambling and their lives were being destroyed by gambling,” Lloyd said. “I had players who I’d ask, ‘do you want to come for lunch?’ They’d say, ‘no, it is too expensive that place.

Ryan Garthwaite (born 30 June 1998) is a professional Australian rules footballer playing for the Richmond Football Club in the Australian Football League ( AFL ). He won a VFL premiership while playing with the club's reserves side in 2019.

"His performance at VFL level was okay, what we were probably after more so was his work rate - to get back to what we knew (he can do)," Hardwick said.

"He's started to work his way back into that, trained incredibly well this week.

"Every now and then the players, while they perform, don't quite perform to the level of expectation we have of them or they have of themselves.

"We know when he's at his very best, it certainly helps our football side ... we're glad he recaptured that last week."
