Ferrari F1 star Sebastian Vettel was fuming after a penalty meant he did not win the Canadian Grand Prix despite crossing the finish line first.

Mercedes' Lewis Hamilton was awarded victory and Vettel relegated to second after the former world champion copped a five-second penalty. Vettel had led the entire race after starting from pole position.

The sanction was imposed for a lap 48 incident, where Vettel lost control on the turn three chicane and ran on to the grass. His re-entry to the track was deemed too dangerous, after he came within inches of Hamilton and forced the reigning world champion to brake sharply.

“I had nowhere to go. I seriously had nowhere to go. I didn’t see him. Where the hell was I supposed to go? This is the wrong world, I tell you. This is not fair.”

Vettel staged a protest of sorts, pulling the No.1 placard away from Hamilton’s car and placing it in front of his own in parc ferme.

Vettel initially dodged media post-race and went straight back to Ferrari's garage, fuelling speculation that the four-time champion was about to boycott the podium. He eventually fronted up, to a roaring ovation.Ferrari teammate Charles Leclerc finished third, meaning Mercedes missed a double podium for the first time this season. Valtteri Bottas finished fourth, nearly 30 seconds behind the second Ferrari.
