Port Adelaide defender Matthew Broadbent will take time away from the game with the full blessing of the club in order to focus on his mental health.

It was announced on Thursday that the 28-year-old, who returned to the AFL this season after a near two-year break due to an ankle injury, would have an indefinite break.

Broadbent has played four matches this season for a career tally of 165 games.

"Matthew is a valued player, teammate and person at the Port Adelaide Football Club. At this point, the best option for his overall health is to step away from the game for a while," Port football manager Chris Davies told the club's website.

"The club's primary focus is on Matthew's health and welfare and we will continue to provide him with the ongoing support he requires.

"We can't say at this point how long that will be but he will be given as long as he needs."

Broadbent returned to the AFL arena for the round-eight clash against cross-town rival Adelaide.

The mental health of AFL footballers has been a constant issue in recent seasons.

St Kilda star Jack Steven has taken two stints away from the club this year after citing mental health concerns during the pre-season.

Western Bulldogs ruckman Tom Boyd, who has spoken at length about his mental health challenges, also announced his retirement.
