Robinson said that his decision to allow Mitchell to skip the NRL clash following Origin I - Roosters vs Panthers - may have been a factor in the centre being dumped.

Mitchell has also dealt with a manager split and ongoing contract speculation this season. NSW coach Brad Fittler claimed that the Roosters hadn't been happy with Mitchell, while former Blues mentor Phil Gould said that he can't be selected while so "distracted".

Robinson allowed him a weekend off to recuperate, which Mitchell repaid with a good outing against the Bulldogs on Sunday. Yet Robinson claimed that the missed game against Penrith may have been a lost opportunity for both Mitchell and back-rower Angus Crichton to stake their claims for retention.

"I'm disappointed for him, and Angus as well," Robinson said.

"It's a price to pay I guess for the first one [Origin game], but Angus didn't play last week and Latrell didn't play last week, so I think a bit of that's on [me]. I think he [Fittler] asked them to go back and play well, so a bit of that's on me, about not giving them the opportunity to do that.

Latrell hits back at 'harsh' Origin criticism

Latrell hits back at 'harsh' Origin criticism Roosters and Blues star Latrell Mitchell has hit back at critics labelling recent characterizations made about him as "harsh". A NSW minister has apologised for the "spectacular" end to his relationship amid claims he had an affair with a fellow MP. They were sent on December 27 last year after about 10pm. NSW MP Matt Kean, left, pictured with celebrity chef Manu Feildel, appears on the dating app Bumble.

"I don't think they could have done much more than what they did today. I thought they really worked hard for that today, but that's the choice of the selectors I guess."

Robinson said that far too much had been made of Mitchell's struggles.

"There's nothing more to it. The guys believe in Latrell. It's not a coach trying to get the best out of a player. I believe in him," he said.

"He's a good man and he's a good character. He's been put in a spotlight at a really young age; he was 18 when he started playing [NRL]. He's played big moments for those whole 80-odd games.

"And if you ask four out of five Roosters supporters who do they love, it's Latrell. And if you ask five out of 10 non-Roosters supporters who do they love, they'd say Latrell as well.

"People ride the highs and lows there, but the guy's ... he hasn't played as well as what he's wanted over the last month. He went away, gave him last weekend off, came back, trained well and played a really good game tonight. In the end, that's all he can do, and he's done that."

Because Roosters vs Bulldogs ended right as the NSW team was announced, Mitchell found out about his axing while still on the SCG. He was told by Roosters and NSW captain Boyd Cordner, who found out during a live interview. Crichton also found out of his sacking during a live interview.

Robinson refused to blame Fittler for the messy process but said that he and his players would like greater clarity.

"They're both disappointed and they're both men. It's a fair bit of motivation," he said.

"You can be slightly off and not be in a team, and that's what's happened. I guess a bit of clarity why, at some point; it doesn't have to be this week, NSW have got to [prepare]. But knowing what they need to do to improve.

"I'm not going to sit here and bag Freddy. I like Freddy, he's a good man. I love the way he coaches, he's got a different style and he brings energy to a crew of players.

"I'm not going to second-guess Freddy. I know what it's like to be in the seat. So go after it, Freddy, how you like. From my end, it's really good for two of my players (Cordner and Tedesco) and really disappointing that two aren't in."

FORMER PLAYERS WEIGH IN

NSW can't beat Queensland without dumped superstar Latrell Mitchell, former NSW hooker Michael Ennis says.

Ennis' call came after Blues coach Brad Fittler made the bombshell call to axe Mitchell for Origin II.

Mitchell was dumped after a two-try performance for the Roosters on Sunday and replaced by Jack Wighton at left centre. Wighton played as a bench utility in game one and plays five-eighth for Canberra, though he was a centre early in his career.

Mitchell had a poor outing in Origin I and has been beset with off-field issues this season, but Ennis said that his game-breaking qualities were indispensable.

“I don’t think we can beat Queensland without him,” Ennis told Fox League.

Former NSW coach and legendary five-eighth Laurie Daley also reacted with disbelief to Mitchell's axing.

“I’m shocked Latrell was left out. He’s still the most dynamic centre in the game,” Daley said on Sunday Night with Matty Johns.

“I think Queensland would be happy with that. I reckon Latrell would have played well with James [Maloney].”

Former NSW prop Steve Roach said: “He’s one strike player along with [James] Tedesco you need. You need to score points to win.”

Legendary NSW captain Steve Mortimer said that Mitchell's X-factor would be missed.

"I would've had him on there, Latrell Mitchell. He gets out there and creates opportunities," Mortimer said on Macquarie Sports Radio.

"I really do feel for Latrell Mitchell. I think he's a great player and he's a very humble person as well."
