Melbourne Demons legend and reformed gambler David Schwarz has hammered the AFL for whacking Collingwood star Jaidyn Stephenson with a "far too excessive" punishment for betting on AFL games.

Stephenson was today handed a 22-game ban - 12 suspended - and a $20,000 fine after fessing up to three bets totalling $36 he placed on Collingwood games this season.

The hefty penalty puts him on the sidelines for 10 games, with the ban elapsing just in time for him to take his place in the finals should the Magpies hold their position in the top eight.

Shocking moment a teenager slams a baby in a car seat to the ground A drug-affected teenager has been recorded throwing a baby in a car seat to the ground in a US shopping centre car park. The child’s mother Dusty Counts was loading groceries into her car on May 24 when a 17-year-old stranger approached her trolley, before picking up the car seat holding her one-year-old son Jensen and throwing it to the ground. “He was screaming, naturally I got him out of the car seat as fast as I could [to see] if he had bumps or bruises or was bleeding,” the mum tells ABC5. Due to being restrained in the car seat, Jensen fortunately only suffered minor bruising.

Betting ban exposes AFL 's m hypocrisy. AFL legend slams ' excessive ' betting ban . Melbourne Demons legend David Schwarz has hammered the AFL for its " excessive " stance against betting in comparison to its drug policy.

A contrite Stephenson told a press conference he accepted the suspension, with the Magpies also refusing to criticise the length of the suspension, but Schwarz slammed the AFL for its heavy handed approach in comparison to the punishment players get for using illicit substances.

"I'll get howled down for it, and I understand about the integrity of it, I've been through a million of these courses and I understand the ramifications of when players bet on sport, but when you isolate it and look at it compared to other penalties that have been handed down over the journey, come on, let's think about this," Schwarz told Macquarie Sports Radio.

Stephenson set to be suspended for bet on Pies game

Stephenson set to be suspended for bet on Pies game Collingwood's Jaidyn Stephenson is being investigated by the AFL for allegedly placing a bet on a Magpies match this year.

AFL legend slams ' excessive ' betting ban . Melbourne Demons legend David Schwarz has hammered the AFL for its " excessive " stance against betting in comparison to its drug policy.

Jaidyn Stephenson's AFL betting web began to unravel with a passing comment to a Collingwood teammate after Stephenson's X-factor inside 50 will be sorely missed by the Pies as he serves a 10-game ban for breaching the AFL 's wagering rules on three occasions this season.

"This kid has had three $12 bets - allegedly - and he is now going to miss a year of footy."

Schwarz comments once again bring into the spotlight the AFL's controversial policy for dealing with recreational drugs, with players who test positive given two strikes before having their issues made public or copping a ban.

That policy has been instituted with strong consideration for the mental health impacts of outing the AFL's drug users but Schwarz said that same argument could be made for players with gambling issues.

"I get really annoyed when they talk about mental health issues and say these poor kids who do drugs and they've got mental health (issues), well, if a player has mental health (issues) and he's got a gambling problem, it doesn't matter, you blow him into smithereens because it's gambling and not substance abuse," Schwarz said.

"I think there are double standards at play here and I think the penalty is far too excessive.

"I am blown away that a player would get a year for this."
