Gillett, who started both of the first two matches of the series, couldn't finish a training session late last week.

The Bronos veteran left the pitch with a groin injury and hasn't trained since, Queensland said in a statement.

"Maroons second rower Matt Gillett experienced groin soreness during Friday’s field session and as a precaution, was removed from the field," the statement said.

Massive blow for the Maroons as star player Kalyn Ponga is ruled OUT of Origin decider after straining his calf Kalyn Ponga was named to play in Newcastle Knight's match against Brisbane yesterday and in the State Of Origin series decider on July 10 but was sat out yesterday - and won't play for two weeks.

Matt Gillett was relegated to spectator at Queensland training on Sunday as he races to be fit for Origin III. In a move that raised eyebrows south of the Tweed, the Maroons took two days to reveal that their squad's most experienced forward had suffered groin soreness in Friday's training session.

Broncos veteran Gillett left the training field last week with a groin injury and hasn't trained since, Queensland said in a statement. "Maroons second rower Matt Gillett experienced groin soreness during a field session and as a precaution, was removed from the field," the statement said.

"He has had scans and is receiving treatment.

“'We will continue to provide treatment and assess his progress to give him every opportunity to play,' Maroons doctor Matt Hislop said.

"As a further precaution, Gillett won’t take part in the Maroons opposed session with the Queensland Under 20s this afternoon."

The potential injury is another spanner in the works for Queensland coach Kevin Walters, with fullback Kalyn Ponga ruled out through injury.

In Ponga's absence, Cameron Munster moves into the number one jersey, with Dragons playmaker Corey Norman starting at five-eighth alongside Daly Cherry-Evans.

Gillett has made 20 State of Origin appearances for Queensland, debuting in 2012.

The 30-year-old missed most of last season - including Origin - after breaking his neck early in the year.
