Gillett, who started both of the first two matches of the series, couldn't finish a training session late last week.

The Bronos veteran left the pitch with a groin injury and hasn't trained since, Queensland said in a statement.

"Maroons second rower Matt Gillett experienced groin soreness during Friday’s field session and as a precaution, was removed from the field," the statement said.

“'We will continue to provide treatment and assess his progress to give him every opportunity to play,' Maroons doctor Matt Hislop said.

The potential injury is another spanner in the works for Queensland coach Kevin Walters, with fullback Kalyn Ponga ruled out through injury.

In Ponga's absence, Cameron Munster moves into the number one jersey, with Dragons playmaker Corey Norman starting at five-eighth alongside Daly Cherry-Evans.

Gillett has made 20 State of Origin appearances for Queensland, debuting in 2012.

The 30-year-old missed most of last season - including Origin - after breaking his neck early in the year.
